Hi there, I just a new 9 week old baby bunny two days ago. I took her to the vet and he said she is healthy except she has roundworms. He gave me some medicine to give her but I don't know what it is called; it's supposed to be three more treatments that are once every two weeks. He said this is pretty normal and many puppies and kittens have this. Has anyone else had a bunny with roundworms?

There are a number of types of roundworms(including pin worms) that can infect rabbits. Was the vet more specific on exactly what type of nematode your rabbit has?

Pam

Pin worms are the most common roundworm that rabbits get. They can be hard to eradicate, but cause little health concern. Other species of roundworms can cause more serious health problems.

I would not be overly concerned since the rabbit is now being put on a treatment program.

:wave:My bunny Charlie got diagnosed with Pinworms in July-ish. I have to take his poop in for another test as I FINALLY (after 4 months!) think they're gone. Talk about hard to eradicate! Charlie ended up having 3 treatments of the once every 2 weeks for three weeks... so 12 weeks!

Good luck! PM me if you need.

Wow, that is a long time! I see you're from Toronto. I love Toronto! I've been there twice and every time I go I see a play. I've seen Lord of the Rings and Wicked and I'm going to see We Will Rock You and The Phantom of the Opera in March!

:threadhijacked:yeah - I am going to see Wicked AGAIN in a couple weeks and I can't wait for We Will Rock You!

Ok back to pinworms...

Hmm.. he was getting Ivermectin for the pinworms. Not neon though - it's clear. Wonder what yours is....

PS: How often do you come up? I Loooove the theater, so I try to go as much as I can afford - it adds up.I LOVED Wicked. It's easily one of my favorites, so I am making my fiance go with me to see it.

Oh, Wicked was amazing!!!!!!! It's coming to Michigan this summer, and I may go see it again. I went to Toronto once last June and once in October, so I like to go about twice a year. I'll be there in March, and hopefully I can go this summer. That really adds up, too!

Has Charlie been underweight because of the pinworm?

Hmm, I think he was underweight yes, but he continued to gain weight which was good. One of the reasons I think his pinworms are finally gone (beside not seeing them anymore :?) is because he's filling out more now and he wasn't really gaining too much weight before. They didn't seem to affect him too much health wise, but it was pretty gross.

Nemex (pyrantel) is commonly used for the treatment of roundworms (including pinworms). It is also considered safe for use in rabbits.

Pam

Pinworms are very difficult to eradicate and there is no medication that kills all stages of the pinworm. The rabbit ingests eggs of the rectum when eating cecotropes and starts the life-cycle of the pinworm over.
