I've made a decision...1st thing Monday morning I'm calling the eye specialist and making an appointment hopefully for the same day. Then I'm calling my vet and cancelling/postponing the surgery. If surgery ends up being the right thing then so be it but if it's something that could be fixed with antibiotics then even better. I don't want Rosie to suffer in any way.

This is Rosie

I'll try to get pictures of her eye. She's not cooperating right now.

I've called the vet and left a message to cancel the surgery for tomorrow. I just hope I can get in to see the eye specialist tomorrow. She can't seem to chew her food very well. I assume that chewing is causing her pain but she's still interested in food. She came running over to me this morning for some banana and ate that. I also gave her some oats and syringed some critical care into her. She looks so sad and I hate to see her this way. My husband is buying some baby food on his way home from work and I'm sure she'll be able to eat that on her own.

Since we've been putting ointment and saline on her eye it does look better than it did Saturday morning. It was so dried out it looked dead but not so much anymore. Everybody was right and I'm sorry if I came off looking like a lunatic. I was really upset. I still am but I feel better now that I cancelled the surgery. Wish me luck on getting an appointment for tomorrow.

Heather

Canceling the surgery is definitely the best thing to do.

Given the latest update, though, I'm not convinced an Ophthalmologist is an essential next option. If her appetite slacked off a few days before the eye problem, and now she's having trouble chewing, I have to suspect a tooth issue. That is I believe the most common cause of Exophthalmos in Lionheads.

You needto cancel the surgery, but you may want to either consult with your current vet (especially if he'll give you a free consultto re-assess) and gofor aset ofx-rays, or find another very rabbit-savvy vet in your areaexperienced in rabbit dental issues.

Your current vet's reasoning may be that the cheapest option was to operate and just diagnose and deal with the cause during surgery seeing as x-rays may not be conclusive, either, but eye surgery on a rabbit should not be the first option.

I've sent out queries to a fewprofessionals to see if they agree, so hopefully I'll have more info shortly.

I've already started looking at new vets online and I'll call around in the morning. My husband agrees that maybe our current vet isn't as knowledgable about rabbits as we've thought. He didn't even check her teeth now that I'm thinking about it. I can't believe this is happening. I'm going to start crying again.

Please don't cry !

You are a great bunny owner

You are doing everything possible to do the right thing

You don't accept everything that your told but are looking at all possibilites.
a very smart bunny mom ;)

She's gone. She started having seizures and died shortly after I got home. I'm grateful I made it in time and got to say goodbye. I can't believe this. How did this happen? I don't know what to do with myself right now.

OMG this is terrible but it has nothing to do with you or anything that you did.
she was just very sick...
I think my heart will break from your pain. :(......................

it was bound to occur................ nothing that you did or didn't do!!!!11111

I've edited the title of your thread to reflect that she has passed - I hope you don't mind. It seems like that's almost all I've done today - its been a rough day on the forum.

I'm so sorry for your loss - you must be totally devastated - its such a shock.

I wish I had words - but I'm sitting here with tears running down my face....

I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry for the emotional roller coaster you had with Rosie but you did all that you could do..

Ive been in your same shoes before with other pets/family members and know how hard it is - we are HERE for you.

Warmest of thoughts and hugs from Julie and Baxter!

Know your Rosie was WELL loved (and you by HER)..

I'm so sorry Heather.

To be honest, the more research I did, the worse it looked. Chances werethat there was a growth behind the eye -- maybe an abscess (and maybe stemming from a tooth root issue), or maybe a tumor.

I'd tell your vet that youwould like to know for sure what was wrong (in a non-confrontational manner), tell him you'd like to educate others, and maybe he'll offer a free necropsy. Honestly, he should. He could usethe education.

An abscess literally pops up in a matter of hours. You had her treated quickly, you did exactly what you were supposed to do. She was in good hands.

But she was veryill little bunny.

:rip: Rosie. Yours is a very sad loss.

I just want to point something out that I learned with Houdini - as you may know we just lost him this week.

There are times we do everything we can - we do everything right....but we still lose them.

In our case - we think he got bit by a brown recluse spider or something along those lines. I've heard of 400 pound calves dying in 2 days from a brown recluse - a 3 pound bunny didn't have a chance.

Its the same way with an abcess....as Pipp said. You did everything right. But sometimes....stuff happens in spite of our best care and our best intentions.

I'm sure you are devastated right now - she was such a cutie....

But take comfort in the fact that she KNEW she was loved (she had to - I can tell that from your posts) and the fact that you did all you could.

Sometimes - you just can't beat the odds when something bad happens.
