Crystal, Ror is doing well tonight! No runny nose at all today. I haven't heard him sneeze since I think Saturday. He's still acting perfectly normal. He has his vet appointment on Friday officially, but because I have tomorrow off work, I'm going to see if we can't be put on a list where they call us if someone cancels! Zin thinks Rory may be having tooth problems that are causing the occasional runny nose, apparently his symptoms are very similar to those of a buck she has, and he's the right age for it. Hopefully we'll find out for sure on Thursday or Friday!

He definitely isn't getting worse, thank goodness! When he has had the mucus, it is perfectly clear and very fluid- not sticky at all. And during the times when his nose hasn't been running at all, the mucus dries and you can't even tell it's there. That seems like a good sign I think. When his nose runs, it just dampens the cleft between his lips a little like in the picture I posted earlier. Like I said before, for some reason in the picture the mucus looks yellowish, but it is definitely clear. He may have gotten hay dust on it or something!

We're back!! Poor Rory was a mess. He wouldn't let me put him down on the table the whole time, he just wanted to be held. He flinched and clenched his whole body whenever the vet touched him! She's the vet who neutered him back in November, and he hasn't been back since, so maybe he remembers what happened last time? Anyway, it was kind of cute how obviously he needed me!

As for the actual diagnosis, good news! The vet does NOT think he is actually ill. His nose wasn't even running when we were there and she could see that his nose isn't crusty or stained or anything. She checked out his teeth, and my suspicions were partly correct... His left lower incisor is wearing a little differently, instead of being straight across, the wear slants a little bit. However, his molars are fine and the incisor wouldn't be causing a runny nose. She thinks he's being irritated by something in the environment, most likely the litter. I've been using stove pellets, and since it's been warmer and dryer lately, it might be dustier than usual. We think the stove pellet litter was actually responsible for Skyler's occasional irritation, and since I changed Sky's litter to Yesterday's News last week, he hasn't had any irritation. So we're going to try using Yesterday's News for Rory too and seeing if that helps.

He has a follow up appointment in three weeks to check on his teeth again, and I'm supposed to bring him in again in 2 weeks if the clear runny nose continues, but sooner if it changes color.

sounds great...

sounds like your vet is going to keep track of everything.

I never used wood stove pellets so didn't know there was dust in them

Poor Rory will need a treat after that vet visit !! :D

I'm really glad everything's ok! I hope the Yesterday's News helps his runny nose too... Poor Rory having all that stress at the vets! I know what you mean though, when I take my bunnies, they always jump into my arms when we're there because they're scared and I'm familiar and safe I guess, and although I feel bad for them being scared, it's sooo sweet that they want you so much, and that they consider you that 'safe' person! :)

I hope his teeth don't turn out to be too much of a problem, but I'm glad the vet's going to be keeping an eye on it...

How is Rory doing now he's home? Has he recovered from the stress?

xx

Thanks, guys! I'm glad he's not sick, too. I hope he doesn't have any teeth issues, but I'd rather deal with chronic teeth issues than something stubborn like pasteurella. And not to worry, Rory did get a treat! I bought these really fancy bunny treats at the pet store called Apple Strudels, they're still essentially junk food of course, but he only gets one on special occasions and goes crazy with them. I gave him his treat while at the vet office and he eventually felt okay enough to eat it, even though his eyes were huge! I haven't seen him act like that since we got him from the animal shelter and the first couple days he was at home. Poor dude was terrified the whole time. Remembering how scared he was when he first came home, it was rather heartwearming to get back home this morning, open the door of his carrier, and see him binky out, happy to be home again :)
