In May I got one of my all-time favorite jobs (at great pay too). I startd merchandising with Proctor & Gamble at the military commissary. I work 6 hours per week - at $11.02 per hour. By the time I get my pay and my mileage - its about $350 per month...not bad for 6 hours per week!

Today we had a conference call.

The whole division that services the military installations is losing our jobs effective September 30th. The new company that is being subcontracted to handle the installations starts up October 1st.

That company has set up a special website for the P&G reps to go to and apply and we'll hear from recruiters within 48 hours...but from what I hear of the company (Acosta) - I'm guessing I'll get offered $9 per hour (maybe $9.50) IF I am offered the job - and probably no mileage.

That will bring my $350 per month down to around $200 per month.

I suppose I shouldn't complain - there were people on the call who had worked for P&G for over 20 years...

I do have an interview with another company on Thursday - one that is sorta the same type of job - but it is service calls to convenience stores - I'd have 52 stores in my territory that all have to be called on once every 3 weeks. In addition there is a "per diem" for mileage, etc. - I'd probably be working 2 8 hour days per week...

Unfortunately - two days every three weeks I'd probably spend a lot of time on the road hitting those stores that are further away...

Anyway - just needed a place to cry...I'm so upset.

:cry1::cry1:

After the conference call - I called my manager to see how she was doing...she was so touched I called. I feel worse for her than me - I only worked 6 hours per week for "extra" income - this was her full-time job.

Sorry to hear that Peg :(

you're right that that is good pay for that amount of hours.

I hope that maybe you can get the same type of job but
52 stores sounds like a lot of driving ....

would ever consider taking the $9.00 an hour job anyway as long as you like it???

Oh (((Peg))) I am so sorry to hear this. That is really horrible to do to people. My mom just had this happen to her this year, in a way. My mother has worked for this company for 29 years and new people took over and she lost alot of money and perks of her job and still had the same job. Now they want her to cross train on every job in the company and still offer her the same pay. The pay she had before was shoddy for her length of time with the company and now it's even worse.
I feel for those put in these situations. It really, really stinks.

 sorry to hear of your news, I hope that you can get a job that you are happy with. Fingers crossed that things work out for you.

52 stores sounds like a lot - but they're convenience stores and the visit is anywhere from 10-25 minutes. Basically - you go in - see if they have all of the items in stock - suggest they carry the items they don't carry - and show them new displays and products coming in. If you sell in a display - you get a bonus.

When I discuss the job with the interviewer today (who would also be my manager) - I am going to ask several specific questions that will help me decide. One major question is - how many stores are in MY town...and how many are in the other towns.

If I would only have two days every 3 weeks "out of town" (an hour away for one and 90 minutes away for another) - I will probably consider it. As long as I do a store in my town before heading out of town....all of my drive time will count as and I'll get paid the hourly wage for it. I am going to be thinking about the gas cost, wear and tear on tires, etc.

Still yet - this is the type of job I'm looking for - much like my current job (which is only in one store)...very easy...and flexible.

Also - I should be hearing today from the recruiter for Acosta - the one taking over the Proctor & Gamble work. I understand they've already called my manager to ask about those of us who want to get hired on and have applied already. Supposedly they have 48 hours to contact us once we apply - that means they need to call me by about 5 pm today.

I'll know more about what they're offering and can make an informed decision.

Since my job is "gravy" (but much-needed gravy in this economy - just I don't need insurance benefits, etc) - I can pick and choose what I want.

I may actually take on both jobs - not sure yet.

Gotta run as I have lots to do today...will share more after my interview.

I'm sitting here on pins and needles. I'm waiting to hear back from the company I interviewed with yesterday.

Their itinerary (which was 3 days per week) was computer generated and it had the rep traveling 3,000 miles in a 6 week period - working 3 days per week.

The itinerary I'm going to counter-propose covers the same stores - but in 2 days per week and only requires traveling about 1500 miles in a 6 week period...because I know which towns are which and what to put together where.

If they wll accept the counter offer - I will most likely take the job. I would think they would want to accept it because it would be saving them approximately $260 every 6 weeks in "per diem" for mileage - plus another $300 or so per month in wages.

It means I wouldn't make as much - but I wouldn't have to work as much or travel as much either.

I got the call - she said, "If we take away this town and this town and this town...(the towns I didn't want anyway) - would you still be interested in the job?"

When I told her that by playing with the itinerary, I was able to get it down to 2 days per week and 1500 miles (actually closer to 1000 now) every 6 weeks - she was HIGHLY impressed.

So now I go through the pre-hiring stages of getting approved with my driving record, etc.

I am SOOOO excited!

To top it off - I like this manager a lot.

When she called to offer me the job and mentioned taking the towns off, I almost cried and said, "Yes...and what an answer to prayer...".

Before she hung up she said something about, "You're an answer to my prayer too...".

Its nice to know we at least share some sort of faith..

Also - my current P&G boss is going to bat for me with Acosta to get them to contact me ASAP about getting hired on with them for the job I have now since they are the ones who got the contract.

So - I may wind up going to 4 days a week - but two longer days and two shorter days...and making some money that will really help us out..

I guess when God closes one door - He does open windows (or suddenly show you other doors to walk through).
