I know there are alot gentler ways to put to sleep, but if done properly they don't feel a thing. Bringing a vet out to the country and getting them to euthanise a large dog can cost quite alot of money as can taking it to the vet and having it sedated to remove the collar which bat42072 would most likely end up having to shoulder.
That still doesn't make it right, mind you.

Hopefully one day a person that is capable of shooting and killing a suffering animal....will one day decide to just shoot a dying person instead of getting that person to the hospital...man...what a waste of time and energy. Phew...and the cost associated with that!

It's pretty much the same concept, in my mind. It's illegal and tragic, human and animal.

I'm done, as I have made my point. The dog is dead, due to an inhumane and illegal death.
you were not there and you don't know my husband.... he would never hurt anyone or thing just because they were dying... He doent even hunt for food... he felt he had no choice ... he tried to save the dog ang could not... so when you are in this situation then we will see what you would do if you couldn't get help getting this dog loose... it was really horrible seeing the dog like that... whe could have left the dog there to die on hi own I guess that would have made you feel better about the situation... I am sorry if that makes you mad.... a human somebody would have helped him but since it was a dog nobody would come out to help...

she is running loose and she does have a shed to get in.... I am trying to find someone to take her... I would if I was able to keep another dog ... I have to many and my dogs don't really like her... I am making sure she has food and water

to others:

I am sorry that i posted this... I am sorry that people are judging on something they were not here to see the situation and juging my husband when they don't know him... Maybe they would feel better if he just left that dog to die on his own...

I am really sorry that it offeded people that we put the dog out of his suffering but there was nothing we could do short of cutting the pine trewe down that the dog was attached to to get him loose which would have killed him doing that...

I will not post anymore on this subject or any subject like this...

That was the point I was trying to make. Sorry if I said it in a cruel way, Undergunfire. Sometimes when you are in that situation, just looking at that animal's face can make you feel certain ways. Sometimes, ending it's suffering is the best option (being that no one would be able to come out and rescue the animal).

I am not fighting or arguing with you, bat42072 (sorry, don't know your first name ;)). Did you see my post up a few? The one with the questions? :) I'm trying to think of ways to help you with your neighbor's dog. Is it stray, or tethered to the property?

the dog is running loose... And I have a few leads on possible homes for her... my sister is trying to get her husband into getting her... but it may not happen... I will continue to help this dog ... she will not go hungry as I will feed and waterher aslong as she doesn't have an owner...

I would almost try to catch her and tether her on your property. I would be very worried about her going feral. Her getting into a scrap with local wildlife would also complicate things. Rabies is never fun! ;)

Because I mentioned the feral dogs, I should mention that it takes less time than a lot of people think for an animal to go "back to basics". Some old friends of our family live up near Crandon, Wisconsin, and they have a terrible time with feral dogs. When they moved there, there were no feral dogs, after a few months and a few people abandoning dogs, a whole pack of feral ones turned up. They went back to their "wild" instincts pretty fast, and before they knew it, they were feral, and dangerous. It was weird hearing about a pack of wild dogs (retrievers, hounds, etc.) running around in the woods. Our friends had to carry handguns to walk their property when checking fences and maintaining the trails.

Because you're feeding her, I doubt she'd go feral, but if she did, she wouldn't be as afraid of people as feral animals should be. I also would worry about the rabies possibility (if she finds the wrong wild animal to tussle with).

bat42072, I think you did the right thing in your situation, you obviously care about animals and it died in a very humane way, and didn't even know what happened to it. I don't think people should judge you when they weren't even there.

Sorry, guys, I just can't agree with shooting and killing a PET because it was "the only option" because there are always other options.

This is one that we will have to agree to disagree. So please no more on this topic.

Bat please keep us informed on this current dog we are all intrested to know how she makes out.

Recently in the news there was a bunny who was left behind. I hate people.

That's how my bun Roxy ended up at the shelter... her people moved out and left her behind. Thankfully the landlord found her before she got too dehydrated or starved...

That's just heartbreaking. I can't believe the SPCA can't help. I'm glad you're feeding her but this poor dog's situation is just so sad. What will happen if you can't find a home for her?

if I cant find her a home I will most likely end up keeping her but I really can't keep every dog i find or gets left behind... my brother in law is thinking about it... they have 1 dog and 2 cats so hes not sure if he wants another pet... but keeping fingers crossed

undergunfire: it your opinion... and i respect that and if their was anyway possible to have saved him trust me we would have... Like I said we don't even hunt animals for food so we would not haave done that if there was anyother way...

If we could have gotten the sherriffs dapartment down here that is probably what they would have done there was no other choice we could have made....It was a horrible situation alll around... If we were in the habit of killing pets just to do it... I would not have most of my pets...

Two of the rabbits we took in last summer were abandoned in a foreclosed home. Please people - just turn them in at a shelter! They have a much better chance at survival.

Unfortunately in the area I live in the shelters tell you flat out. NO new animals. I've been told at one point that there is a kill shelter in ....... you can take them there. CLICK!!! It's a sad situation :(

This is going to be my last post on this subject.... all of our shelters are full- I have contacted them... I will look out for her... she is doing great right now... I check on her several times a day... I have to wait until I can get a pen before I can even dream of bringing her to my house... my dogs don't like her... Hopefully I will find her a home ... i have a couple of people thinking about it... I don't blame anyone for not rushing in to taking this dog.... I want her to go to a great home... she at least deserves that

DISTURBING POST - Do not read if you are easily disturbed.

Well, my Grandad shot a dog once. It was their own puppy, only a few weeks old, her name was Hannah. She bit through the wire they had over the bars of the kennel and wriggled through, ran into the road and got hit by a car. She could only run in circles and her head was partially caved in. She was yelping in pain. My Grandad took a shotgun and shot her. To be honest they could have called a vet who would have come and put her down (she was never going to survive) but they live in the sticks. It would have taken half an hour for a vet to get to them or them to a vet. Yes you wouldn't shoot a human, but ambulances can get to a patient a lot quicker than a normal person can get to a vet.

....and why on earth is ANOTHER disturbing story of a dog being shot being posted here?

How is that disturbing? It's not like he shot the dog for the fun of it - it was a mercy killing. I would have found it more disturbing if they had let the poor thing suffer like that for another 1/2 hour...

When I was a kid the same thing happened to my neighbor's cat. It was staggering around in circles making the most awful noises -- I couldn't watch and to this day I have no idea if they just waited for it to die on its own or brought it to a vet but I can tell you if that had been my pet I would have done anything to end its suffering as soon as I could. There's no reason for any animal to have to suffer longer than it needs to especially if you know there's nothing you can do to save it.
