One of our rabbits Georgie was at the vet this past week for a minor case of GI stasis. He was also dehydrated. This was not a typical case of stasis as he never really stopped eating. Vet did an x-ray and blood test and other than kidney levels being high nothing really stood out as a problem. Stayed overnight and when we got him home he was eating great. Friday we noticed him not wanting to eat as much and today it got much worse. We were given notes from the vet to give him 35ml of Critical Care three times a day if he was not eating along with the prescriptions we were given. Also I noticed this morning his area had a strong pungent urine smell. This evening we found a little drop of blood on him and in his litter. The smell did not register with me or my wife until we saw the drop of blood. Then it all made sense - Urinary Tract Infection.

He is drinking water and we have been giving him Sherwood Appetite Restore about four times a day. He laps it all up. He is selectively eating things he really likes. He is cleaning his face and body and overall seems alert.

Question: nearest emergency vet is an hour away and we have had some bad luck with care there. Or I can wait until first thing Monday morning and get him back to the vet who took care of him this week. They are basically an animal hospital and the vet there is one of the best around. I have full confidence in this vet and the care Georgie will get.

What do I do? Can this wait until Monday morning?

What prescriptions were you given? Any of them an antibiotic?

No antibiotic. Verti DMG - immune support medicine, Rehmannia (herbal kidney support), and optional Reglan if stools are smaller and less frequent.

No new blood this morning. Mixed up more Sherwood Appetite Restore and he lapped it all up. Started cleaning himself again too.

Sorry to hear your bun is battling a UTI. They're absolutely nasty.

You do need to get some antibiotics prescribed by a rabbit savvy vet asap though. Also, he must be in pain so he needs some painkillers too.

You could call or email your trusted vet for some pain meds and other stuff to make him more comfortable until you can get him in on Monday if your vet will cooperate.

Good luck with your boy. Its absolutely awful when they're sick 😢

As long as he continues eating a sufficient amount to prevent GI stasis setting in, I would think he'd be fine until you can get him seen tomorrow. It's just my opinion though. But a UTI doesn't usually progress to a critical state quickly, so despite discomfort with it, there's usually a little time, provided that's all that's going on.

Now if you start seeing a lot of blood in the urine, if he stops eating for more than 12-24 hours, he starts to deteriorate, and/or you have concerns that he isn't doing well, then getting him seen immediately is something I would see as essential.

I ended up taking him to the ER vet at 8am. Had to wait two hours to be seen. Vet ended up giving him a broad spectrum antibiotic. She thinks he has a Upper Respiratory Infection as well. Also gave him some Meloxicam for pain. Just saw him eating some hay and drinking water. Hopefully we are past the bad part of this.

Plan to take him back to regular vet tomorrow morning.
