Is it normal for my rabbit to be so sleepy all the time? She's eating well! She loves her oxbow pellets and she has a lot of hay. I noticed she always sleeps and lays down. When should I be concerned? Thanks!

It all depend on your rabbit personality but they sleep a lot. If you think it’s a new behavior or strange, I would go to a vet because there can be some health issues.

One of my bunnies sleep hrs in one go but that’s normal for him while another of my bunnies take many short naps.

She usually takes many short naps but now she seems to sleep for hrs. She goes out of her box though to run around but gets tired again and lays down everywhere. Thanks for the tip!

Is it hot where she is kept, over 80f degrees ?

Hi! I live in the Philippines and the average temperature nowadays is about 32-35 degrees Celsius. We put her in a cooler area every afternoon due to the heat.

The heat is probably why your rabbit is laying around a lot then. Rabbits that are feeling too warm, will tend to lay around more, trying to help cool themselves down, particularly if they have a cool floor to lay on, that can help lower their body termperature. And 33-35 C is quite warm for a rabbit to be in.

As long as your rabbit continues to eat and drink normally and maintains a healthy body condition/weight, that is a good sign that it may not be a more serious health issue. But in warmer temperatures, it's important to keep an eye on your rabbit to make sure your rabbit doesn't over heat. If it's allowed to get to the point of heat stroke occurring, that can result in serious organ or neurological damage, or possibly even death. So it's really good that you are keeping her in a cooler area in the heat of the day. Other things that can help are refreshing her water bowl with cool water, providing a frozen water bottle to lay next to, cool tiles to lay on, keeping her in shade and out of direct sunlight, and a fan blowing indirectly near your rabbit.

If you ever suspect your rabbit is showing signs of severe heat stress occurring(eg. breathing rapidly, ears excessively warm or hot, lethargic, not eating/drinking much, flared nostrils, nose raised in the air, salivating, not moving or getting up, etc) , steps need to be taken to immediately cool your rabbit. If there are signs of heat stroke such as mouth breathing, listless and unresponsive or semiresponsive, that would be an immediate emergency and steps need to be taken to immediately start to safely cool your rabbit, and at the same time get her to a knowledgeable rabbit vet.
