Pet insurance?

Is pet insurance worth it? Does it pay a good amount of the expenses?
How much per month?

I had pet insurance on a previous rabbit a few years ago. It was through Nationwide which I think became petinsurance.com or something. I paid the premium in full for the entire year and I don't think it was super expensive. Maybe 250.00? It had a good reimbursement like 80 or 90% after a deductible of probably like 50.00 or so. I don't remember it was 2 or 3 years ago. I have this for our dogs and they can rack up incidents but the rabbit never really had any issues. It did not cover his neuter, just sickness. He did get one respiratory infection which after the deductible I got check for 5.00. Our dog has to have knee surgery though so I anticipate getting a thousand back, so that is where there is more of a help I think. When I shopped around for this insurance at that time, this was the only company which offered it. It might be good if your bun is prone to issues and sees the vet a lot. Mine just did not. And then one day I got up and he had passed away just out of the blue overnight. So although he had insurance it did not happen to help us that time. I have a pair and their kits now, and I haven't re-enrolled anyone, but I might if someone starts to have issues.

I’ve got rabbit insurance. I’m not sure if it works the same way in the United States as it does in England.

I pay £11 or something like that, a month for my insurance.
Our cover pays a fair amount. If it is over the excess, they’ll pay the rest. And for conditions that are reoccurring - such as Apollo’s sore hocks - they’ll pay directly to the vet, and I won’t have to pay anything.

The one problem that I’ve found is that they don’t pay for preexisting conditions.

I’d just say just look around for policies, get some quotes and decided if it’ll work for you and which one is best.

Make sure and read fine print, some insurance plans don't include exotics. Bunny vets are pretty expensive!

If you have two buns they each would be covered separately, so you would have to get two accounts but I am sure they would have a "multi-pet discount or something. Our dog policy does that.

I used the ol' google to find the rabbit insurance. Although at that time Nationwide was the only US carrier so there was no other choice. Like Dagny mentioned it is pretty good. I never felt it was a bad plan. I was just not able to use it much - which overall is not a bad thing either. If you have never used pet insurance before, it is really more of a reimbursement plan, it is not like human insurance. So I didn't need to see if my vet accepted it or not. I paid the full cost to the vet, and submitted the paid receipt to the insurance company who reimbursed based on their rules. Nationwide reimbursed exactly what I expected and I got a check very quickly.

Also it seems like Pet Assure covers rabbits now too? Rabbit Insurance
I have no experience with them but at least there might be more alternatives than when I enrolled.

I called a pet insurance and your right they don’t cover pre-existing conditions kind of bummed out LOL. I signed up for a pet insurance just now.

Nationwide is what I have for Trixie. I pay $12/month. My deductible is $50 and it covers a range of illnesses but not pre existing conditions which they will tell you right in the beginning. If she does have a condition, they will ask you for the results. I had to appeal my application with Nationwide to get my rabbit approved. She is very healthy and I hope I don’t have to use it often but it’s better to have it than not have it at all, then be stuck with a huge bill.

Nice really only 15 per month I have to pay 35? The person on the phone told me about they don’t cover for pre existing illnesses but my rabbit hasn’t even got diagnosed with the three vet visits I had made for her. I wish they would cover it because I don’t know what’s wrong with her. Reason why I wanted to get the insurance.

What if I wanted an X-ray for her will they cover or urinalysis? Vet sucks(half job) i guess you can say so I’m going to suggest that. There are no other decent vets around here. Will it cover if it’s connected to the problem she has? It was pre-existing but not diagnosed.

Yes, you should try it out I say it’s pretty good from the looks of it. I called yesterday and they explained what it’s all about.
Vet was getting pricey know that i have two even more. Hopefully this will help!

My bun Toffee couldn't pee properly so I took him to the hospital and he ended up having surgery for a stone in his urethra. $5000. No insurance....... I think it's worth considering insurance, based on what I had to pay out of pocket. At least he's fine now

Oh wow! That is a lot thank goodness he all better. I say it’s worth it just in case I ever need it.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned and this is the case for pooch insurance, not sure about bunny insurance: there are different plans for different levels of care. Some for just preventative care, some for full blown health coverage, and some with a combination. Of course different costs.

Preventative indoor bunny needs are pretty minimal so the info above may not be reality for bunnies.

Are you also with Nationwide? The first month after I applied, I was changed somewhere around $25 or so (can't remember). But the following months were only charge $12. I wish they accepted pre existing conditions. I had brought up to the rep when I applied that I was concerned about a lump that Trixie just got and he had to include it in her application. Then in order for the application to be approved, I had to provide Nationwide a definitive prognosis of the lump. I do wish I hadn't said anything because then her visit would have been covered.

That's generally for dogs and cats. For Nationwide, they only have one plan for exotic pets (rabbits fall under this category).
