well, i was in the bath room, and when i cameout, maomaochiu was on top of my table and in front of him, was someresidues of my hershey chocolate......

he had a bout a 1"*0.5" piece. would that be problematic forhim? i am a little concerned now, and my bf is freakingout......

To be honest, right now I'm far more worriedabout the litter you're using than the chocolate that Maomaochiu ate.(Just keep it where he can't get to it from now on...)

The litter issue is very serious...

I don't know about rabbits, but in dogs and catsits poisonous and will kill them. We almost lost a dog thatway when I was a kid. I'd call the vet to find outor do a search on the net for things poisonous to bunnies.

That's why my bf is freaking out, because he knows chocolate is detrimental to dogs

I would keep an eye on him. Wasithimwho ate an M&M before (I cant remember, butsomebun on here did).

Make sure he is eating and drinking and pooping. I dont think its anything to panic about, but just keep watch.

EDIT: I was just looking around on the net. I think if I were you I would call the vet.

This is from SPCA site on the care of rabbits.....

Rhubarb, potatoes and chocolate can be poisonous to rabbits.

I would seriously call your vet hon, better to be safe than sorry.

please keep us posted on how Maomaochiu is doing- I'm sorry if I sounded abrupt before, but I was really concernedabout the litter you were using.

I think I'd call the emergency vet, too... I'm a worrier.

Was it dark chocolate or milkchocolate? All chocolate is toxic, but it's the dark that'sespecially bad. Butthat doesn't soundlikea very big piece, if it's light chocolate, depending onhow big the bunny is, should be okay, but watch VERY closely fordiarrhea, appetite loss, lethargy, etc.

Here's the M&M thread.

Just found the Freddy thread I was looking for...

Here's the summary, courtesy of Freddy's Mom:

FreddysMom wrote:
Freddy ingested about 4oz of milk chocolate

he did not show any signs of poisoning, such as rapid breathing or confusion

they did bloodwork to find out the actual toxicity levels in his body

He was treated with activated charcoal, sub Q fluids

spent over night in animal hospital for evaluation

went to my vet in the AM where he recieved another evalution and another subQ fluid shot

instructions were to observe him for three days because that is howlong it takes for the chocolate in the body to be at levels no longerconsidered poisonous.

Dark chocolate, bitter chocolate is the most poisonous

bitter-sweet, milk chocolate is still poisonous but less that dark

white chocolate is least poisonous of the three

Here's the summary thread, there's another one that took place as ithappened, but I think this one covers it. (Some otherinteresting ailments here as well).

PS: Moving this to the Infirmary

Thanks guys! i will keep a close eye on him!

the chocolate is hershey's milk chocolate. but it is actuallybigger than i originally thought, 1" by 1.5".maomaochiu so far looks o.k., but i am gettingnervous. it is weekend so hard to get a vet.

and ec, don't worry about being 'harsh' on me, i know we all care about the buns and that explains all.

cheers,

maomaochiu

Hi guys, just thought to update you aboutmaomaochiu, the chocolate eater. this morning at 7 when ichecked on him, he did not pooped for the whole night, and peed just alittle bit, so i got worried again, and decided to give him some romainlettuce. he ate it, and then at 9 when i checked on himagain, he pooped about 20-30 poops, so i was relieved. he isactive and alert as usual. i will keep a close eye on himthese couple of days though. thanks again for all yourconcerns!!!

That's great to hear!:colors:

Berri ate a piece of milk chocolate once (my 3 year old brother decidedto share his chocolate bisuit with her!) and she was fine too. But thatwas only a tiny piece. I'd hate to think what would happen if a rabbitate a lot of chocolate...

Sunny ate almost a whole Oreo cookie once.
My daughter left the box out and I didn't know it, until we came homeand found Sunny on the end table in the living room with a cookie inher mouth.
I managed to get it away from her, but then realised that she had already eaten 2 halves!
I panicked, but she showed no sign of distress whatsoever.

Wow! I always thought that if a food was poisinous to an animal, it wouldnt eat it. But maybe not!

My friends dog got into the fridge once and ate half a huge bar ofdairy milk chocolate! But she was totally fine :dunno:

Glad your buns ok! Tell him chocolate is bad for his figure! He will stop eating it then.

lol. I think in nature they know whats good/badby taste/instinct but with artificial man-made items (I don't thinkcocoa beans taste very good like milk chocolate or M&Ms) theydon't know the difference.

I was actually thinking this stuff too. It seemed when Bud had a slightstatis or gas he turned away from greens (I think too much of those andno pellets are what caused it) so I was curious if he actually knewwhat was best when it came down to it and it seems he was right. It'dbe a neat thing to research =P

Just a note. When I had Bun Bun, hewas only about 2 at the time, he got into my son's easter basket andtook off w/ one of those chocolate peanut butter eggs, by the time Igot across the room to get it from him, he'd eaten most of it, foil andall and he was fine. He was a junkie! Loved french fries too.

I'm so glad to hear that Maomaochiu is doing well!

Thanks guys for sharing your concerns and stories!

i just told maomaochiu, both in english and chinese, as i think he isbilingual, that if he keeps eating chodolate and the other sweet stuff(yep, he's got a sweet tooth), he will never find a decent girl to hangout with...... and maomaochiu, from his facial expressions that i cantell, could care LESS...

silly wabbit!!!!
