We got our chickens exactly a week from today, onTuesday. I thought we had gotten twelve, but my mom said that they gaveus a bakers dozen. I found out we had thirteen by counting them! Ilittle shocking to have one more than she told me! SOOOO, here's somepictures of them! I took these a couple days ago, so they're muchbigger and have a lot more feathers grown in on their wings.

Chickens crack me up. They are suchfunny little creatures. Where do they live? I hateto say this, and don't take it wrong, but aren't chickens a littlestinky? I remember being like 8 or 9 and going to a familyfriend's farm and going egg hunting with her daughter...I seem toremember it being a little smelly. I have to say, fresh eggsare the best though.

Oh, look at the little tail feathers in the 1stpicture! They are sooooooo cute! I'm planning ongetting some chicks in 11 days to raise for eggs. Ican't wait!

ETA - I hope the smell factor is like that with any animal - not bad ifyou keep it clean. You can build a moveable coop so that thewaste does not pile up.

Thanks, I was going to get some BlackAustralorps. I'll make sure to PM you with anyquestions. Whew, it has been exhausting doing all thisresearch!

My son brought a chick home from school after the class hatched them!

Can anyone tell me how to sexchicks? I am looking for females and would hate to get 12chicks and end up with 12 roosters lol. Any websites oranything would be such a big help. Thanks.

Tina

It's extremely hard to do. Even the experts canbe wrong, but if they've practiced for years, only a couple will besexed wrong. it's easiest done when first hatched.

There is one "iffy" way, hold them by their necks off the ground, if it struggles hard, it's female. If not, male

Sorry for how short and curt the above was, the bell rang in the middle of me typing it, so i had to rush.

If you get them through Murray MacMurray, they'll be pre-sexed, youhave that option, the females are more than the males and the straightrun. The term "straight run" means that they are not sexed, they justpick the amount you want to buy. I don't think you'd like to go throughMacMurray's it's expensive and you have to have a minimal order of 20chickens.

If you get them through a local college, one with an AG department(like we did) they will have them pre-sexed, and normally only charge adollar.

Farm and Fleet and TSC do provide chicks for sale, our local Farm andFleet has them as well at the moment (i am NOT impressed at theconditions that they were living in. Very dirty waterers and littleclean shavings left)Farm supply companies are more expensive (like$1.30-$1.45 or even $2 per bird)It's fine to get them through farmsupply companies, just make sure that they're in top health.

Ellie:cool:post pictures soon!
