My Fred boy is the bunny that has mites at the SPCA. That and being that he is a Flemish or New Zealand (they don't know) is putting him at extremely high risk :cry1:They have a deadline for next Monday :cry1:They were told to have a whole bunch euthanised this morning but the volunteers refused. :cry1:

They are only starting treatments if I understood. This is a very very very bad situation :bigtears:

They have 55 bunniesand gave them next Monday as a deadline to drop to 15. Any bunny not in a foster home will be euthanized. :cry1:

I'm heartbroken and bawling my eyes out.

I'm thinking of building a huge NIC cage in my laundry room and grabbing a few. :cry1:

I'm sorry if I sound stupid or uncaring - I do care.

But I don't see where mites are such a bad thing. They're easy to treat - I just treated a girl for them today and expect to see changes within a couple of days. She's living with other girls too - if they start to show them - I'll just treat them too.

I wouldn't hesitate to foster a rabbit with mites....its so easy to take care of.

Sorry - just my .02!

Oh no! Poor bunnies! Is there anything to do to help? Is it possible to send bunnies over the border to the US to be adopted?

Peg, like I said... Fred is a flemish giant. Mites or not won't change his size :?It just means that's he's basically "unadoptable" due to his size, and as if size wasn't enough, he has mites on top of it.

You might not hestitate but I admit that being that I have 4 bunnies I really wouldn't take the risk myself as the mere chance that mine get mites is enough for me to say no. Sorry but I cannot afford to treat all of mine and I simply do not have the time for it right now as in washing everything from top to bottom and all that. I know it's a limited risk but it's still a risk and one I am not willing to take at this time. If everything was in order, I would do it. The SPCA would not cover the bills for mine and they wouldn't send someone to come and clean :p

I had wanted to foster Fred from the dayI saw his pic but I can't evenfigure out where to put him. Poor thing would need exercise etc. :?I'm in love with Thelma and Louise as well, but again, where do I put them? They are flemish, they need a huge cage to be in during the day. I can't stick them in a smallish one :?

i wish i was closer, i would take a few in(as fosters)just to keep them alive. . .

it is so sad. . . to think that some bunnies won't even get the chance at life, just because of there size and that they are currently homeless

They have no funds whatsoever. Those bunnies wouldn't be alive without volunteers. It's not the SPCA that covers the bills, but rather the volunteers that got together and opened a bank account for that purpose and they put in money from their pockets and raise money by selling chocolate.

The SPCA really shouldn't be named an SPCA because it gives a bad name to all the others :?This is just one heck of a lousy place. All the SPCA does is provide the room and some basic pellets. That's it. No funds for vets, no funds for spays and neuters, no hay, no nothing.

Ask any volunteer that works there and they all say the exact same thing. Half the population will turn away when they find out the bunny is at the SPCA. They have the worst reputation. :?Unfortunately, it is the bunnies that suffer.

MsBinky,

I wasn't trying to say YOU should foster Fred...sorry if it came across that way.

What I was trying to say is that mites aren't really a big deal to treat - its usually a quick fix and so for ANYONE who is considering fostering...they should know it is easy to treat.

I treat my whole herd every few months for mites (just in case) and I just treated some does today because they looked like they were coming down with them. I am pretty darn sure that when I check their ears in a couple of days - we'll see major changes.

So if anyone else was expressing interest in fostering him - they should be told that it really isn't hard to treat.

I think all SPCA's are somewhere in between what you're talking about - they're not a good shelter for buns and small animals.

Oh I wish I lived closer to you! Is there no way you can contact the Ontario HRS and see if they can take in a few?

I know it's a strech, but I could find them homes in Vancouver, and we have quite a few bunny shelters here - one of which just opened up.

I'm new to rabbits, but I always thought people wanted Flemish Giants. I know they're big, but people always seem to want the "different" animals.

Again, this is probably a stupid question, but are there any Flemish Giant rescue organizations around?
These people are in Michigan, but maybe they know somebody where you are:
http://www.freewebs.com/runawayrabbitry/index.htm

These people are in Quebec:
http://www.quebecrabbitrescue.org/

Again, I am sure I haven't just brought up anything you haven't already thought of, but that's all I can come up with at the moment.
*hugs* and I hope something comes through for you.

oh i love thelma and louise too! that michigan rabbitry looks like it might be a good choice--they have a lot of flemmies. can't these buns be sent to other shelters instead of PTS?

is it ear mites or fur mites? Not sure if it said somewhere. I just took in one with fur mites, in another week if she is still all clear she gets to go into the "real rabbit area". i hope someone does take him, be a shame if he doesn't find a place to go.

thelma and louise are to adorable too. Maybe there are some people who can help if they can be transported in to theUS.. maybe abunny transport thing if we have any people will to help

I posted some time ago in the rescue but I didn't get much responses. An offer was made to take in the buns at a shelter in Vancouver. Like I said, they have no funds whatsoever for the bunnies. And plane organization is really complicated.

I don't know what can be done transportation wise... It's really discouraging.

As for the flemish, we are in Montreal. Most people live in appartments and 90% refuse animals. Bunnies aren't understood very well here at all. Bam-Bam was not being adopted because of his size and the guy is an eglish spot :?Here, if it's not a dwarf, it's pretty much hard to get it adopted because ppl have that idea that a small bunny can stay in a small cage and be a nice decoration. :banghead

I might have found 2 fosterers but they didn't know it was for the SPCA. Watch them back out now. :tears2:
