New Bunny Isn’t Pooping

We got a new bunny today, he’s a gorgeous mini lop. He hasn’t pooped in probably 6 hours though, the car ride back home was a little over 2 hours, and we put him in his new environment and shut the door and made sure it was dark and peaceful. A little bit later I gave him some romaine and two raspberries and he started eating the romaine. He’s acting completely normal, rearing, doing the prairie dog thing, and hopping around. He’s not pressing his belly to the ground at all. Other than the no pooping thing, he’s acting normal with digestion. I decided to syringe feed him some olive oil, my sister helped me and then I drizzled the rest over his veggies. I’m hoping this helps and I removed any pellets he had. I’m thinking he hasn’t pooped because of stress? Or maybe because he hasn’t really eaten today other than when he got to our place? I’m not too worried, any ideas anyone on what you think this might be?

It is just stress. I would stop messing with him and giving him olive oil, it is just stressing him out which will make it worse. Give him lots and lots of hay to keep his digestive tract moving, and give him time to settle. He should be fine!

Thank you so much! It’s nice to know that it’s probably stress. I will make sure to leave him alone now, thank you for the advice! I will get a picture up in a bit, I don’t have any yet of him.

The stress of the car ride, being in a new home, and not eating much can account for the lack of poop you are seeing. If by this morning you still aren't seeing any poop, then it could be concerning. If he has also stopped eating or hasn't eaten much, then I would suggest making an appointment with a knowledgeable rabbit vet for today as he may have developed GI stasis and may need meds to help get the digestive tract moving again. A rabbit shouldn't go more than 12-24 hours without eating a sufficient amount or it's considered an emergency. If he is eating then he may be fine and I would just monitor that he continues to eat well and starts pooping sometime today. If you've taken away his pellets then you are going to have to make sure he is eating a pile of hay at least the size of his body, twice a day.

It's really not a good idea to be giving him olive oil or any other unusual things that he isn't already accustomed to having in his diet. Especially after the stress of a car ride and also if he is a young rabbit, it's never a good idea to suddenly introduce new foods into the diet, aside from grass hays. There's a chance the olive oil could lead to a digestive issue like mushy poop or continues to not poop and stops eating, so be prepared to monitor for that.
