Hi all
I have a rabbit who has just recovered from 5 months of treatnent for a diferent issue. The other day i put him outside to let him finally stretch his legs and all but when i went to bring him in he had escaped his pen and i found him with his chin gashed open and bleeding.
He was bleeding enough that it was on his fur but after i washed it with some water and diluted F10 solution it stopped and i was able to take a look at it. Im unsure where he got the wound from but it was after vet hours and i am out of money due to his previous treatments and surgeries. So i couldnt take him to the vet. I have a skin stapler and a small supply of emergency first aid stuff for the rabbits, and made the decision to put one staple in so he wasnt bumping it and pulling open the swollen flap that had been created, and to try help it heal closed.
Ive been trying my best with what i have over the past couple days. Im flushing and washing it as best i can morning and night and im packing it with Manuka honey and trying to discourage him from licking it. I cant bandage his face unfortunately. Im a little worried about infection, since he had only just finished his 5 month course of antibiotics the morning this happened and i hate the idea of him being at risk after 5 months and thousands of dollars worth of vet bills to make him healthy again.
The wound hasnt bled since and i think the swelling has gone down a little.
Its still swollen though and has very clear purpley red bruising under the skin.
I have been giving him metacam to help the inflammation and pain.
I have 0 clue how he got injured, it looks like he somehow cauhjt and tore it, he was next to another male who might have been able to nip slightly through the bars but he shouldnt have been able to get this much of a bite through the bars onto his chin so i really doubt it was caused that way.
I really dont have any money left otherwise id have taken him straight to the vets, and i plan to if i suddenly come into a spare couple hundred over the next day or two. But i doubt that will happen.
So my question is, given my tough situation, is there anything more i can do at home to help him heal? Or anything specific i need to look out for in terms of early infection signs?
