So heartbroken that I had to witness my lovely lion head rabbit having seizures following return to home after dental treatment yesterday snd abscess puss removal from his mouth. He's had dental before and never had an issue about 15 months ago. But I brought him home today and he was the usual drowsy after the vets but suddenly started to have seizures so horrid to watch. I was with him stroking him holding him to make sure he did not hurt himself. Then he let out the most horrid squeal which I knew that was him dying. He did not die slone but I feel so guilty for putting him through the treatment. He had a large abscess on bottom jaw so the vet said they can't do much in these cases. I just keep crying. We think he was 9/ 10 he was a rescue I took in 3 years ago. This forum has been supportive in the past. I think he has too much medication 3 types I was asked to give him but I never got chance.i hope there is a bunny heaven!

I'm sorry for your loss. Abcesses are a tricky thing as far as i'm aware, especially when they pop up in essential places like the face or joints. You shouldn't feel bad for trying to re-improve your bun's quality and quantity of life.

I'm very sorry he didn't make it, but it's good you were able to be with him in the end, to provide what comfort you could. You shouldn't feel guilty. He had a health issue that you were just trying to get the proper treatment for. It's one of those difficult things with older rabbits. They start needing more medical treatment as they get old and health issues come up, but it also becomes more of a risk because of their age. You were just doing your best for your rabbit. In the end, he knew he was loved and had a good life with you.

Thank you this abscess was in his mouth and growing in to the bone so they can't remove these.

Thank you your words are consoling. I have another rabbit so she will get even more love. It's just so sad. I have arranged his cremation and ashes so I will get him back.

I am so sorry, he had the best life anyone could give him, Hugs, And Binky free baby

I am so very sorry for your loss. You should in no way be guilty. If he had tooth/mouth problems, you had to do what you did. Sometimes, horribly, things are out of our control and when we do the right thing, it doesn't always end up happily. Especially with the little animals. Please stop beating yourself up. All creatures should have such caring owners. He is at peace now, and there definitely IS a bunny heaven.
Hugs.

Thank you I noticed he was given 3 treatments 2 of which can cause siezures. This concerns me if he was over medicated by the vets. Metronidazole / Enrofloxacin / Buprenorphine I never had time enough with him to give him these but it seems such a lot of medication to give a rabbit together.

Sorry for your loss as I have worked in a vets office anesthesia is tricky specially in older animals I’ve seen animals that have never been allergic to anything in there life go in for rabies shots etc. and then for whatever reason they have allergic reactions. As with my dog fed him same foods for 9 yrs all of a sudden major breakout . The infection in the bone definitely would not have been good either please don’t beat yourself up anesthesia is tricky with animals and humans and you were doing all you can he may have had an underlying issue you or your vet did not know about and with the procedure and meds and infection with added stress it was just too much . You will see him again . Just letting our pets know we’re there for them and care for them even up until the end I’m sure is what they would want .

I am so terribly sorry for your loss, we know how much you loved the little dude. I don't believe he was over-medicated, those are the types of medications I would expect and it is very likely he was not in pain given the buprenorphine, if that's any consolation although I know nothing is during these awful times. Take care.

I’m very sorry for your loss. I know how difficult it is to lose a friend. When this happens with me, I try to focus on the positive, and remember how I added to the quality, and length of their life.

Be well.
Thank you everyone this site is so valuable for rabbit lovers
