This is a bit of a preparation thread because I'm not sure how things are going to go.

On Wednesday Dusk took a good long time to eat his pellets. I have been aware that he might get spurs for a while, so was watching. After some Metacam he perked right up and chowed down.

On Thursday (yesterday) I took him to the vets and told him Dusk had molar spurs, and after an examination, he agreed.

He said that he wouldn't be comfortable leaving them until Tuesday. Right now they have not cut his mouth or done anythign major, but obviously we don't want him stopping eating and going downhill.

He is booked in in the emergency slot tomorrow, for a dental.

Dusk is very lively, his poos look normal ish, but he is not eating much. He must be eating some stuff (I know he is eating oats and have seen him eat some grass and a couple of dandelion leaves, and last night he ate some pear) but not loads.

He is acting normal, and happy, and so I'm going by him, but I am very aware that overnight he might go downhill. He is still on Metacam, but is struggling to eat. He is now in the living room so I can watch him and he can get used to the space for after his dental, which makes things easier. I'd just be really interested to know what he is eating because he's not really impressed with my careful buffet.

But yes, this is in advance in case he does go downhill and I need help and advice quick and don't have time/the brain power to explain what's been going on.

Dusk is 22 months old, a black self nethie. He has not had any problems before and was neutered in November.

I think you areasking for something that he can eat before or after his dental in case he stops eating.

You can wet his pellets and make them into slurry and also mix other things into it like canned pumpkin (don'have it in theUK ?). You can still wet his pellets with hot water and mix them up

Idon't think that you have Critical care either but

you can also use a food processor and blend almost any number of veggies down into a mixture that he could eat from a bowl.

Ithink you can use the food processor with almost anything including the oats that you fed him.
hopefull he won't need it
also small amounts of fruit like banana are always appealing

others will have more ideas

I just use the critical care for Beau mixed with water and pellets and that's his basic diet beside pumpkin

Thanks Angie.

I have done most of those. I'm HOPING that it won't be an issue though.

I did slurried pellets for him last night, and critical care as well as bunny buffet. I don't have a food processor though, so that's not an option.

I'm not asking for anything right now, and I'm desperate to get him through this without force feeding because he won't tolerate that, I think I'm just getting prepared in case things do go downhill.

Thanks for the reply :)

I believe Excel makes something like Critical Care in the UK. Just make sure he has pain meds for afterward and keep an eye on his input/output.

Yeh, the critical care stuff is made here, and science selective also do their own version too.

We've been through several sets of spurs in the past year (Hope, A Dopey, Cloud, Badger) but I have always caught them before it went off their food. Dusk is also a hypersensitive guy which is something that could make it worse. He's put me on edge with this and I don't want him to go downhill at all.

I have found out what he is eating though. He's stuffed a load of hay. Strange bunny, and that's probably why he hasn't yet had gut slowdown (which is normally when I pick them up).

We have Metacam here all the time, so pain meds won't be a problem, and I certainly never hesitate to give it.

He's set up in the living room now in a run, and he is quite enjoying it. This is where he will recover from his GA so the fact he feels comfortable here is a good sign.

Nutri Cal is a good way to get nutrition and calories in and only a small amount is required.

Pam

Thanks for that Pam. I hadn't though about using that. When is it worth using it? Like do I use it only if he is not eating or as a booster with anything he eats or what?

At the risk of being a worrying mum, is it normal for him to be a bit staggery while coming round from a GA? I've had plenty of buns go under before, but not had them stagger. He looks drunk.

He's in a 5ft by 3ft run, but he is keeping himself tucked up in a little nest thing. He's able to move about better now. He ran the length of the run to get away from me, without falling over, and is now asleep in a dome.

Poor boy. I hope he eats something more soon.

Aww, I'm glad Dusk came through the dental ok! Poor bunny, and what a stress over the bank holiday weekend!

I've had my bunnies be a bit staggery a few times after they've come home from the vets. Even if they have the operation at 11am and we collect them at 5 say, they have still been a little groggy looking and a bit tumbly. Mine have usually snapped out of it within a couple of hours max.

I hope he starts eating soon...

No poos yet :( I've not had a dental bun be this sleepy aftwerwards. Normally by now they are returned to normal, but he is still very glazed, although he can now walk in a straight line.

I've given him some very watery critical care, and he has also had a few drinks and done some wees, but no poo at all, and very minimal eating (just some hay).

How much CC should a nethie have daily and how often should it be fed?

Thanks for asking Jen :) Means a lot.

No, he's not great. No more poos, and he won't eat by himself really, although if I harass him with something he will eat it out of frustration.

I put him in the run next to Candyfloss which has livened him up, but still very little going in or out, although he is drinking a lot and weeing too.

Not good for an Easter Sunday, and our cat seems to be ill too. :(

Oh no, I hoped he would be better this morning :(

Poor little Dusk, stop scaring your mummy! I guess if he's still eating when you harrass him, that's at least something. Mine normally wont if I shove it in their face....

I'll be thinking about you guys today while I'm out, and I hope your cat isn't too poorly either!

Hey,

Sorry I haven't yet replied to your e-mail. I loved the picture :D

Dusk is still not great, improving, but still not great. Not willing to eat anything other than hay by himself. He has lost weight, I'm sure, but the fact he is improving is what I'm holding onto. That and he is really lively and perky despite the diminished food.

Thanks for asking. Hope your crew is still all ok.
