I just got a new guy and he is really small, probably a dwarf.
He is active right now, no strange behavior, just not sure how he acts as we have only had him for about 12 hours now. He is running around my living room with the other 2 rabbit we have.

Now to the problem. He is young like i said. His fur feels like wool, very thick and medium in length (you will see in the pics). When i brought him home i noticed a little crust around his eye, kinda dark brown i guess, its gone now and hasnt come back yet. His eyes look normal. His bum does have poo around it though. Could this be from his diet? or should i trim up the area to give him better output?

Update, Just saw him eating poo and i think he might be trying to clean himself.
He has been eating alot since we brought him home. Lettuce, carrot, pellets and hay.

i *think* his eye is ok. im not sure.
what sort of letteue is it?
it might be diet related. but keep your eyes open for any more signs
good luck, he is a lovely rabit

its romain hearts, Im going to keep checking. I think it might have been what they were giving him at the store or breeder.

You really shouldn't change his diet too suddenly or give him too much of anything new.

Do you know what he was eating before you got him?

If it gets any worse, it might throw his whole system out of whack.

Ah, it's good if his diet hasn't changed, it should be changed very slowly over a few weeks, and that includes vegetables and the brand of pellets..

What are the poops in his litterbox looking like?

You can trim his hair (carefully, obviously) but he shouldn't be having soft poops.

I would also cut back on carrots and anything sweet. If he was eating romaine lettuce before, you should be ok to give it to him. Make sure he has lots of timothy hay available. What kind of pellets is he eating? If it is a kind that has colored pieces and "treats" in it, you need to switch him over to one without. That could be causing the mooshy poops. I would do it slowly though- any diet changes should be done gradually over a period of weeks.

He's beautiful though. I hope he's well soon!

I think he was just eating pellets and having water. This is nothing that i have done. Right now he is in the cage with our 2 other boys. all i give them is hay, romain, and pellets. Ill just have to give it a couple of days and see what happens. oh and the pellets we get are in japanese. ill post a pic tomorrow.

he needs some kind of grass hay or timothy hay also. Does he have hay?

next time you get a bun it is best to separatehim from the others for a few weeks to make sure that he is not sick.

Too late now but keep an eye on him

Are you feeding veggies because you don't /or cannot get hay in Japan/
Maureen

be careful cutting fur away ;;

I wouldn't have knownit myself butI went with a friend who is a vet assistant to help trim an angora's wool mat. I know your bun is not an angora butafter my friend started the trim I realized how hard it is not to get the skin . I mean really hard .

So be careful with doing any cutting

The eye looks good to me. I think softening up the poo in the fur with some water might help (like spot-cleaning a rug--just use a wet rag to get the poo wet). It is probably dietary, but he could be overweight and might not be able to reach to clean himself. Do the poos he's making now look normal (firm and round)? Other things can cause mushy stools, such as parasites and infection. Please keep us updated.

I would have seperated them, just dont have the room right now. He has plenty of hay and fresh pellets and water to get too. He does clean himself and does eat his poo. I think it was his old diet. Ill be checking every so often to make sure.
There is plenty of hay in Japan, They are obsessed with small animals.

Ok, he's eating normal, and the poo is the normal color. It's just a little soft. Will the diet i have him on be good?

and ........

unless he is very young he shouldn't be getting alfalfa hay (too rich and high in protein and calcium) but should be getting timothy annd mixed grass hay (bermuda, oat, brome, orchard grass etc)

He has not had alfalfa at all. All the hay is timothy. I gave him a bath earilier and when he was wet the poo was normal. I know because it was everywhere, but when i checked him a little while ago it was poopy again.

When i got fred from a pet store, his butt was all poopy. The next morning, he had cleaned himself up. I don't know if he was depressed at the pet store (his conditions were not the greatest) and was happy to be somewhere else and had the energy to finally clean himslef up or what.

Sounds good. You might want to start rationing his pellets if you think he's more than 8 months old or so. I'd start with a half a cup a day, then go down to 1/4c or less each day, decreasing the amount gradually.

Im just going to give them pellets during the day. They have also been sleeping in their bowl.
