Microchip??

We have an appointment to get our little bun spayed. She’ll be about 15 weeks at spay. They said we could get her microchipped too ~ but is that wise to microchip a bunny???

My two bonded sisters are are micro chipped with no problems we had ours done the same time as their spey as i didn't want them to have it implanted when they were conscious

The odds of losing track of a bunny are slim, but the microchip is virtually painless even to a conscious bunny. To a bunny that's under for a spay, they'll never even know.

They do plan to implant during the spay (and also trim her nails) so that’s a bonus for me!! I pray everything goes smooth. We have another week to prepare ~ what can I expect for pre and post ops and how can I help her through recovery??

I'm thinking about getting my two house bunnies chipped, there are electronic cat flaps that can be programmed to lock them in in the evening, those work with this RFID chips. Would be great, now I have to lock them up in the house all day when I know that I'm not coming home that evening, I'm not at ease when I know they could be outside after nightfall.

I had Dotty spayed last year, what I didn't know and what made me worry was that it took 8 hours til she started eating again.

Oh my goodness!! Did you try syringe feeding her during that time?

The anesthesia can affect their appetite for 24h or so. I had to syringe-feed my girls some critical care after their spays because I was worried about them not eating. When they do start to eat, they'll go for treats like fruit first, then (if I remember correctly) pellets and hay is sort of the last thing they get back into. When they're first recovering, they like it warmer (you can make a DIY heating pad by filling a sock with uncooked rice and then microwaving it... rest it on your arm for a minute before offering it to make sure it isn't too hot). Oh, and make sure the vet sends pain meds home with you (they normally get a shot of meds with the surgery that lasts about 24h but girls often need another 2-3 days of pain meds after it wears off).

Mine are all microchipped. It's something I have always had done for all my rabbits, and I ask the vet to do it while carrying out a spay or other procedure. I know rabbits don't generally make a visible reaction to having a chip implanted but they are prey species and will always hide pain. The chips are quite big and require a wide needle to administer them and I feel it's better welfare to implant when they are already unconscious and there is no possibility of it causing them pain

That’s absolutely true if they are under an anaesthetic, but if that isn’t an option it isn’t any worse pain than vaccinations (which mine get as we are in UK).i wouldn’t let a couple of seconds of pain be enough to put me off .
