We all know that a rabbit's diet should be around 85% fibre, 5% pellets (not museli) and 10% greens, but perhaps not many of us are brave enough to try to find natural and free sources of food for our rabbits. Grass and dandelions are the obvious things that we would go for, and they are an excellent addition to the diet, but over the next few weeks we are going to look at other goodies that we might find for our bunnies to enjoy. Starting with Plantain

For more information on this, and photos too, please see our blog http://rabbitwelfare.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/forage-friday.html

Do you know of a good source of pictures of rabbit safe weeds? I would love to pick more of them out of my yard for the buns but I'm afraid of getting something toxic.

Also, if there are wild rabbits, squirrles, raccoon etc. on my yard and I pick greens, can I transmit nasty things to my house rabbits?

Medirabbit has good information, including photos. http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Food/Food_main.htm

I live in the UK, so am not familiar with the animals you have in the USA...we don't have wolves, bears, raccoons, coyotes, groundhogs, any of those mammals from the Americas. Except grey squirrels and mink which somebody thought it would be a good idea to have over here. (not!)

I have heard that raccoons carry either parasites or bacteria (sorry, I can't remember which)that are harmful to European rabbits. I don't think that either your native rabbits nor squirrels carry anything harmful. Perhaps it would be best to check with an American source?
