Is Mercurochrome safe to use?

Is it safe for rabbits? I can't find anything on it for rabbits or guinea pigs. I need to use it for the guinea pig. If it's safe for rabbits, it should be for guinea pigs too. Does anyone know how safe it is to use on bunnies?

I know it was used on my pet gerbil when I was a little kid...but that was over 25 years ago! I didn't even think they still sold it!:shock:

It's use in the USA was banned in the late 1990's by the FDA over concerns of mercury poisoning.

Pam, it's been put back out on the shelves, but the mercury has been taken out of it.

I applied it last night after it started getting late, and I found one person on another site who had told someone else they could use it for their rabbit. Seems to work good, the wounds look better this morning.
