I need some help for my rabbit! I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the fur was getting thinner on the back of his neck behind his ears. I thought maybe his bunny friend had been licking him too much back there, but now I have seen him scratching back there, quite vigorously, and now there is a large patch that is totally hairless, and it looks like the skin is irritated.

Is there something I can put on the area to make it less itchy, like Witch Hazel or cortisone cream? I know rabbits are very sensitive, and I don't want to put anything on there that would make it worse.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Thank you for any help or advice you might have!

Info about the rabbit:

3-year-old mini Rex rabbit, high energy level, no other unusual symptoms. The rabbit he shares a cage with does not have the issue.

It actually sounds like he has ear mites. You need to take him to a vet and get him treated. You could also check the forum library as to the symptons and treatment of ear mites and other mites. I believe for normal fur mites we use revolution NOT advantage. Rabbits cannot have cortisone cream, how about just some plain polysporin, not the stuff with the pain killer in it as they cannot have that either.

Or, could be ring worm. 1 out of 6 here got it. Treated it and cleaned everything in the room and it's no more. We had a mini rex that would go bald on the back of his neck at the start of every Summer, for 4 years in a row--no mites, no nothing, just a bald neck rex I guess.

Sounds just like ear mites and i picked up some treatment from my feed store....not sur about anyone else...but my vet chatges for eac visit...nd if I can avoid it by treating onmy own ...al, the better...I had a doe like this and she isfully recoverednow!

Yes, turns out it was some sort of pest.. definitely at least fleas, because I saw one! I got a bit of Revolution on them, and it has cleared up nicely. Thanks everyone!
