Two weeks ago at about 4:30 pm a man came into the shelter holding a small white bunny. He said that she had been sitting in his driveway and his dog almost got her. I picked her up and almost died. ..she was nothing but protruding bone and felt like a piece of paper. Her entire belly was yellow with dried urine.

I took her home that night to foster and really thought that she wouldn't make it . She just looked too bad.
She surprised me however and began eating and drinking right away. She has already gained a couple llbs. Anyway to make a long story short she is a real doll...looks like she has black mascara on her brown eyes.

I totally separated her from my other six for 2 weeks and just 2 day ago tried two of my males with her. Rudy has some potential to bond with her Joey  doesn't.

Just yesterday I noticed a small piece of brownish material under her nose and alarms went off.

There is nothing other than that but I feel strongly that this rabbit has pasturella. Her immune system must be 0.

I had planned to adopt her anyway (Jim said I could although I didn't even ask him. That gives me a lot to think about because he's never done that before. )
Anyway rather than fight with the shelter over taking her to a vet I filled out the application today. They are going to let me hold off on her spay because of her condition.
If she stays like she is right now I will be taking her to the vet on Mon. I want blood drawn. I can't believe that this little girl is not going to have future problems because of her condition. She was malnourished at a very young age.
I have some concerns that 2 of my rabbits were in contact with her but I will deal with that as it happens.

I named her Little Star but now I am thinking of changing it ti =o Lolita
Her name will probably be Lolita Star.

Anyway she is the newest member of the family and maybe I can get one of those throwaway cameras that allow you to put pictures on the computer. If I ever get a blog it will be the longest of anyone's with all my pent up fury over no ever having seen my rabbits.

Anyway I'. back on the new RO
Anyone want to give me suggestions on Lolita Star please do. She is eating and pooping fine.

That's great!!She's a lucky little girl. I'd love to see pictures of all your buns. I think a camera is definitely a must :) Keep up the great work at CRHS. They're forunate to have a volunteer like you.

P.S. Vivienne Violet is doing really well. The fur on top of her head has grown quite a bit and now when she puts her head down it flops over her eyes and looks like she has bangs :) Thanks for taking such good care of her! I'll send pictures when I have some new ones.

Julie told me about Violet's new hair style. I'm glad that she's doing good.

I have been trying to find a name for my new one for days now just like you... thinking of Colette, Pristine, Lilly, Meadow, Lola, and on and on and on.....

Lolita doesn't fit her right now but if she gets well she's going to have very flirty eyes . I e-mailed Angela that she's got the name of a "lady of the night" Lolita Star.

wow Maureen what a story! Im so happy you saved her and are adopting her. What a lucky girl.

And yes, you need a camera! I want to see pics :)She sounds like a real gem.

She is really cute and I would be way happier if I knew that she was physically Ok but i think that it will take awhile to see how she does.

I know that if a rabbit doesn't not eat for even 24 hrs. that they can get permanent liver damage. I am guessing that someone took her out of an outdoor hutch and let her go.
If she had been loose outside she would have been able to eat grass and flowers etc. She appeared to have not had anything for a long time.

I have has a lot of rabbits here in the past year and for some reason this is one that was meant to be mine.

I wish I know who did this to her ..I still cannot believe that people can be so cruel.

When I first had her she was so thin it was not comfortable to even pick her up ..never saw a rabbit this thin.

angieluv, How sad. :( How lucky you can offer this girl a home.Sounds similar WRT how a couple homeless buns in our family became permanent members, or bonded to another.

Momma was found in Kettle Moraine State Forest and she came in (to the shelter) pregnant. I got her out before a euth call was made. Purportedly she was begging for food from people at picnic tables in the forest. Very thin. Coccidiosis, but we didn't know that until after the babies had all died. Good to get her to a vet as soon as possible. Will be thinking of you.

Sending little Lolita Star -- and Vivienne Violet --caring caresses.

Pent up fury on pictureless gallery, LOL. :D

Please provide updates when you can... Julie

When I foster I am not allowed to take her to a vet unless it really looks serious and I get permission... and even then it is the vet on call for that week. There is one vet I would not go to ..knows nothing about exotics but likes to experiement .There is only one vet here that I know routinely does bloodwork so I have to wait until Mon because she is in 3 days a week.

Lolita looks good today but I am going to play it safe.

Julie- Which bun of yours were you talking about?Sad story but glad she got a good home.

Maureen- You'll come across the right name. It took me quite a while. Even after I named her Violet I was calling her Vivienne more often for some reason. Now I know she's meant to be Vivienne Violet :)

P.S.- YOU NEED A CAMERA!!!! :)

How can people do things like that to animals it is sick so happy she has a forever home with you she sounds beautiful.

hope for pics soon:)

Maureen, you are a saint! What a sad story. I'm so glad you are keeping her. I know exactly what you mean about how she's meant to be with you. That's how I felt about Fey and Sprite before I even saw them.

We definately need pics. If you have a normal film camera, you can order a cd when you have the pictures developed and use that to post on the internet. I've done that before... and got a digital camera right after, LOL! I need to see your bunnies!

My only suggestions right now would be a bit of Nutri-Cal daily (not just calories, also has some handy vitamins) and maybe echinacea to help boost her immune system. You already know all about quarantining so that should be ok.

How is her breathing? Does she sound normal? If you suspect that she has mucous buildup you can put her in the bathroom while you take a hot shower. It will help loosen everything up and help her breathe more easily.

As a note, most rabbits have already been exposed to Pasteurella and other bacteria that cause common problems. It's other things such as a poor immune system or an injury that allow the bacteria that are already there to grow and cause problems. So Rudy and Joey will most likely be fine. :)

BTW, I love her name! I hope she grows into it. ;)

Jim and I are talking about me getiing a camera..I think that I will be getting one.

Today Lolita had nothing under her nose ,completely dry ..nothing.

But the dayafter I placed her in a large x-pen for a few hours and she was more active and I also tried to introduce Rudy and Joey (separately of course) she had a little "stuff" under her nose that looked like a (excuse me) a booger.

None of my other rabbits ever had anything like that so I am thinking that this is occuring when she is stressed.

I would not have tried an introduction that soon but in the back of my mind I wanted to see if their was any potential for a bond before I adopted her.
She has very clear eyes no congestion so I'm hoping that time and good food and rest will build her up.

Thanks Angela for suggesting Nutrical . I haven't used it ina long time but she is a good candidate for it.

I can't wait to post her picture (and the others too)

I just knew that this bunny belonged to me..it didn't help that she runs to me and climbs on my lap. When I am in barefeet she licks my feet. What a sweetheart.

She's claimed you now. :D

I hope it's just the poor immune system from the ordeal she went through and can recover when she gets her weight back.

One of Pebbles favorite foods is Nutri-Cal rolled up in oats.

Rainbows! :)

I'll send you some quarters for a DIGITAL too!

We gotta see those pictures!

cmh, the stray from Kettle Moraine State Forest is Momma, big agouti girl. Our family member #4. 'Cept when she came in she was very thin and had the intestinal parasite which I'm sure the babies contracted. Some died at the shelter, one was stillborn, and the 4 that were born/transferred to our bedroom all died within a couple days. And who knows how long of a time she spent in the forest before coming to people at picnic tables, starved for food.

I'm really glad I got the call to save her. Thanks everyone for the tip on Nutri-Cal and oats.

I was just thinking about you and Lolita! She sounds like she's absolutely in love with you the way she follows you and snuggles with you. Looks like you two were meant to be together:) How does her health seems? Is she gaining any weight?

P.S. Great job on posting the pic!

It took me all day to post that pic.

Cara I will e-mail you privately because I bought a Kodak Easy share and installed their program and am having some problems
I took pic of the other 6 too but in time I will post them as I can't do this hour after hour.

Lolita had her blood drawn on mon. but I do not have the results yet. She weighs something like 2.7 lbs. and she is looking much  better.
The vet thinks we should wait to spay her but actually doesn't see anything wrong on exam alone.

She has gained a lot of energy and when I put her in the huge magic pen she just runs to me. I could barely take her picture because she was trying to climb on me.

I never had a rabbit that acted like this...I have one other that likes me a lot but the other 5 seem sort of like "take her or leave her"

Lolita is very trusting which I think is sort of unusual.

Anyway once I get the hang of this camera you'll be seeing a lot of pics

Cara why don't you send another pic of Vivienne Violet?

Wow...your new little girl is gorgeous!

Your story reminds me of Flower...I'll be happy to hear of her success, just like my baby's. My heart is with you, and I can't wait to see more pictures! :)
