I'd LOVE to buy a horse-sized bale! Would it attract varmin? I could keep it outside, but I am pretty sure we have field mice and gophers in the lot behind our backyard. I'm just worried about attracting little rodents and creatures other than buns ;)
Some store it in massive tupperware-like containers. I store hay by the bale in my shed on a movable rack. The hay itself is placed in a plastic hay bale cover used at race tracks. It helps to keep it less messy.

Yes. The larger quantities one buys in are usually less expensive. The more "country" you truly are, the less you will probably pay.

Here in NJ, will pay $8.50 - $10.50 for average bale of timothy or alfafa. The last bale I bought was of some "super" compressed grass hay mixture that was supposed to reduce the volume of two bales into one, weighed 65 lbs, and was just irresistable to buns for....$20.00!

To date, it does seem all that and might just be worth the price as I am still getting the same amount by weight...supposedly.

Sometimes I'll use KayTee Timothy if I have any buns on the road with us during vacations and/or extended trips.

AH! Great idea! I am going to get a HUGE tupperwarecontainer tonight and I am going to the OK Feed Store tomorrowmorning! Thanks, Buck! :D

Yeah, the price of hay in pet stores is absolutely insane!!!

I get bales of grass hay free from farmers in my area. I usedto be paying loads of money for hay when I had 4 rabbits and got iffrom pet stores. It will help now especially since Emmy had 3little babies! ;)

I have 10 rabbits and 2 guinepigs and all lovetoo eat much hay. I buy the hay from a horsefarmer for 5$ and on oneoff the bale the rabbits habe 1 month.

I have the hay in the house in a big karton from an airconditioner.

If you guys can find any horse stables in yourarea (look in the yellow pages under "riding lessons" or somethingsimilar), you canprobably buy a flake or 2 forcheap. They may look at you kindof funny, but you can stillprobably buy some pretty decent hay cheaper from them than fromonline/mail order. ;D

Just keep in mind that if you're going to be storing hay for any amountof time, keep it somewhere out of the sun & allow it plenty ofventilation. Rubbermaid containers/garbage cans aren't reallythe best long-term storage option, unless you drill lots of holes toallow airflow.

Of course, I'm guessing that airflow isn't as much of a problem for youguys up north... here in Florida, though, thehumidity is*nasty*... and moldy hay isn't any good for anything.:( Remember, too, that improperly stored hay that's gottendamp can, under the right circumstances, spontaneouslycombust. Ventilation is key when storing hay.

Properly cured & stored, hay will last for years... but if yourhay is brown, moldy, extremely dusty, or smells bad, it's time to buynew hay.

I'm going to have to go down to Calgary (3 hourdrive) to get some Oxbow Hay.

Rainbows! :)
Don't drive for Oxbow! You can get it at theferretstore.com or at petfooddirect.com

The Ferret Store doesn't charge for shipping if you order$35or more. They get it to you in a couple ofdays. It's great. 40 oz Timothy Hay is $11.80 andthey have pellets, too (5lbs - $12.65). I was paying morethan that locally and I had to go pick it up! This way, itcomes right to your door.

I buy "Kaytee" Timothy Hay from Targetor Walmart. The problem I have however is that I always look at the bagand the hay looks good then get home open it up and its all powder!

I can'topen them in the store or should I? Would they escort me outta there?

I'd hate to pay more to get the same result.

I guess if I don't have anything better to do I could pulp it into a sheet of paper. LOL!
