Dear Fellow bunniy lovers,

Hi I am from rural NSW Australia, and I just lost my bunnies to Myxi as there is no vaccine available in our country.

My yard is fenced, my cages screened, yet they still were infected, and even though I battled with my bunnies to fight the disease, Myxi was clearly winning, so with a heavy heart, I had them put to sleep.

I am posting this to ask you all for your support please. I have started an online petition at gopetition.com to get help to make my Government change our laws and make the vaccine available to domestic rabbit owners.

Please go to the site, there is more information there about the disease if you are lucky enough to never have encountered it.

If you would like more information, please let me know.

Please sign up and show your support for our bunnies health, safelty and longevity.

Sincere thanks for your help, I really appreciate itand bless you all.

Hi there,

I'm terribly sorry to hear of your loss...it's so sad for the little bunnies here to not be able to recieve that vaccine....it's unfair and just plainwrong.

Thereis a member here by the name of Bunny Mum...she lost four of her precious little bunnies through having that dreaded disease a little while ago:(

It's sad

Cheryl

I have asked this member if it would be okay to move this thread to the main forum where many more people will see it. So, moving it there:).

I'm really hoping that you get this vaccine to your country. It is so very much needed. Best of luck!

I will sign up but do they have that in the states.

If so do our buns hear need it also

Hi! As far as I am aware the Vaccine is legal is UK and some parts of Europe such as Sweden.

This is why I have started the petition to help us as responsible domestic pet owners have access to the vaccine.

If you have not seen what Myxomatosis does to a bunny, you might like to google it and see what awful photos come up of poor infected bunnies. Doing this will help you see how devastating the disease is, and help you spot signs of it if it occurs in your area. There is NO TREATMENT. 99.9% of infected domestic bunnies WILL DIE>if they are not put to sleep earier by their vet.

I am out raged as a taxpayer, voter, pet lover and owner and member of the public that I cant get this vaccine. The disease was full scale released in Australia in 1950, the current "kill rate" from Myxiis less than 50%. Wild rabbits cost my country $200 million in damages last year alone-some 58 years AFTER myxi was spread intentionally to get rid of wild rabbits.

It was hard enough for me to take my two bunnies (I was there when they were born six years ago) to my Vet to have them put out of their misery, But it was so much harder on my little girl. Shes nearly 3, and cant understand why our bunnies couldnt be fixed, and how do I explain the complexities of the regulations to her? I wont burden her with all the details of course, but I know that shes devastated her bunnies are gone, and since I know the truth I am so sad and bitter that their death and suffering could have been prevented.

The only protection you and I can currenty give our buns is to keep them in fly screened cages orkeep them indoors and pray they dont get bitten by an infected insect. I had myyard fenced to keep out the feralrabbits who are in their hundreds here-and my cage was screened. It took one mozquito bite each to kill my rabbits.

Please encourage your fellow countrymen and women to petition your government too. (As I am not a resident of USA I cant give my petition to your government, but I can sign yours and you can sign mine.) You can start a petition for free like I did at gopetition.com. Meanwhile please go to thelink for my petition and sign it if you can.

The UK is leading the way, we as other Major Nations deserve to follow their wonderful example.

OMG they picture are horriable.

I cant believe any country state anything would not provide something to help them. I will be signing and find out what I can do here onmy end in the states and be doing research for it for a few weeks

Thank you sincerely, for wanting to help. I am SORRY you had to see those pictures, let me tell you, its so much worse when its your very own bun who is dying as you are watching them succumb to the disease. Its so horrible and painful, the bunnies chest rattles, they struggle for air-they cant see and run into things, their eyes weep white goo constantly, they have messy bottoms, wont eat or drink so a syringe is needed to get water to them-oh I could go on, but I wont as it really is too upsetting when its seen first hand- and that itIS a preventable disease.

Thanks for having the courage to try to make the changes we need to make our bunnies safe and protected. Let me know if I can do anything to help you.

I was just wondering...have you posted this petition on AustralianCompanionrabbit?

Cheryl

Hi Mate, No I havent as I havent heard of them (no disrespect guys!)

Do you know of their web address please, Cheryl?

I am emailing as many people as I can....Iam trying to post on BUNSPACE, but I am having trouble getting my account set up with them.

If you have any other suggestions, please fire away! : )

Many thanks to you!

Nelly Thumper, I'm so sorry you lost your two bunnies from Myxi, it's a horrible disease and no bunny deserves to die like this...There are other members from Australia here who have also lost their buns, it's devastating to be so helpless...

I'm no. 135 in the petition, I do wish to the Australian bunnies& bunny parents that they succeed in this very serious demand.

Myxomatosis is very rare in North America. There are sometimes a few small outbreaks on the West Coast as it's in the native rabbit populations, but from what I understandit's a different variety and the vaccine might not work. Vaccines for myxi and VHD are not allowed in the US because of the possibility that vaccinated animals might test positive for the disease and complicate attempts to control an outbreak.

It's definitely need in Australia though. Such a horrible disease.
