Help, I think his toenail got ripped off?

So I let Gaara out to play today, and after about 30 minutes I notice little blood spots all over the floor. So I panic and search for him. I find him and inspect him and see a bloody foot. Upon closer examination, which was a struggle to see in between his fur, it looks like a toe nail is missing. He was an amazing sport, and let me hold him and look at his toe just fine. But I feel terrible, and have no idea how it could have happened. Also he made no noise at all, so I'm not sure where it occurred.

Firstly, does it look like a missing toenail? Have any of you guys ever dealt with anything like that?

This is very common , need not worry about it. It has happened with my bunnies many times. Just clean the area with very dilute betadine or very dilute hydrogen peroxide and leave it alone.

Yep. Happened with Bunny once. Not a problem. She didn't act distressed, but then once again bunnies are masters at hiding pain or fear.

I agree - this happens a lot, especially if the rabbit is a nail biter and if the tool used to trim nails leaves jagged edges behind. It took me several years to find a high quality nail trimmer and finishing file.

As this sometimes can start a bleed that becomes very difficult to stop (not to mention how other accidents can cause massive blood loss to people and pets alike), I keep a few of these around the house.

There are some situations where having one of these is the difference between life and death, IMO.
