Is it a small dwarf breed? and how big will your rabbit be?

Smaller rabbits don’t eat a lot of hay, just so everyone can get a picture how much hay to buy ☺️

Okay that's the size range of an holland lop, if you are going to own one a 5 kg (10 lbs) of hay will be enough for nearly 2 to 3 months. It will all depend on how big your bunny gets. I know when I had my french lop with netherland dwarf and holland lop they went through 20 lbs of hay every month. Now, I only go through a third of what I did in a month before and I have two bunnies (netherland and holland lop) to feed.

Myself rather buy 2nd cut hay because I react badly to the hay that get cut early. But first cut are supposed to be the best for bunnies, the price of the hay would be expensive for me if I went through a lot of hay at one time which I no longer do. But you only have one it will be within a good range for food.

You can also look at tractor supply/stores if they are called like that if they are selling bales of hay. They are often cheaper and can be in a better quality. Sometimes if you have a local pet shop you can find hay there. But don't know how usa works, because at my place they get hay from the locals farmers. Live in an area with a lot of horse owners :)

I looked online, facebook, google maps and called all farms/supply stores in the area. I asked those who didn't have the bales I wanted if they knew anyone that had any. Eventually, I was able to find a farmer and buy a bale for 4$. I have a small Polish rabbit, it should last 1 year almost. We'll see!

A rabbit should be eating its body size (not weight, but size of body) every day.

If you are looking for the cheapest source of hay, it would be buying it by the bale from a local feed store. Baled hay is so much cheaper than bags from the pet store, that you'd be better off buying a full bale and throwing 3/4 of it away (if you don't have room to store it). Keeping just 1/4 of the bale would still be cheaper than bagged pet store hay.

Hay is the one thing you do not want to skimp on as far as providing plenty for your rabbit. They typically like to pick through and choose choice pieces. There will be wasted hay and that should be expected.

Here's some further info on hay/types/feeding:

thank you so much !!!!!

If you are worried about the cost of hay, perhaps you need to reconsider whether you should adopt a bunny. What will you do when the bunny needs veterinary care? That can easily cost hundreds of $.

I buy big bulks of Timothy hay for my bun and just give him big handfuls of fresh a day and clear out what’s left when I clean him out every week! It lasts forever so buy as much as you can afford! :)

I usually buy large bulk boxes of Timothy hay. Im from England so I get it from hayboxclub. I would warn though, rabbits aren’t really cheap. I’m not trying to deter you from rabbits but I’m a similar age to you, and I wouldn’t recommend getting a rabbit if you can’t afford it. To keep costs down I’d recommend talking to your mum on what she can afford and then calculating what a rabbit would need. I’ve just realised that this doesn’t really help.
I’d check your local farms as they usually sell hay for quite cheap. I get 15kg boxes and they last three months roughly.

Experienced rabbit owners know that the price of hay is worth more than an expensive DVM bill when somebun goes "off." Or chews inappropriately and you need to get as much fiber through their GI tract.

DVM bills can run in the area of $400 if somebun needs xrays, fluids, Critical Care, cisapride (gut motility med), simethicone, and meloxicam, plus pay the cost of an exam. A wise parent or individual will realize that plentiful hay handouts that a rabbit will easily nom, nom, nom each day and output plentiful marbles is worth every cent! -- Even for wasted sections that are scattered or peed upon in their litter box.

Rabbits are not inexpensive companion pets. Always do your research and let your parents know they may spend several thousand dollars over the next 10+ years. Will your bun be spayed and neutered already? Can they provide vet care for your bunny w/a rabbit-savvy DVM?

We purchase from our House Rabbit Society. We also purchase locally from a bunny dad/mom who have llamas and they are very particular about the hay quality. Bales run $5-$16. The latter hay bale cost is with donation to HRS who provides lifesaving measures to unwanted companions. Alternately you can sign up for Small Pet Select to ship boxes to your doorstep.

Our crew did not always like the stiff texture of SPS, and YES YES YES, pet store hay is expensive. An option is to check if there's an HRS or rescue in your area in case they can give you recommendations?

FYI, our 7 y.o. NZW started to have ileus / GI stasis, a year ago. She's a heavy shedder and I didn't stay on top of keeping her brushed. She may have also ingested some long fur strands in her privates area when reingesting her cecotropes.

- Xrays showed a partial blockage, and our DVM advised daily subQ fluids and ileus meds plus meloxicam for approx. a week. Until her xray and her interest in eating improved. The bill was approx. $1200.

My 5lb mini rex is a huge hay eater. I get this bag for $20 and it can last me up to 8 months.
