Help Finding Vets in Chautauqua County

I have finally saved up enough to get one of my rabbits neutered (I plan to do Bullet first), but I’m having trouble finding a good vet. There was one that you can’t go in with your animals for the pre-neuter exam which I want to be there for to make sure they actually know how to handle a rabbit, and another that only does neuter (not spay) which made me uncomfortable. I could really use some suggestions for a good rabbit vet in my area. Thank you for any help.

Have you looked at the HRS vet list? Or the old list here on RO? You could also do searches for cities close to you in nearby states. And even though there may be a listing saying it's a rabbit vet, it's always a good idea to research the vet as much as is possible, and ask the suggested questions that are important when looking for a knowledgeable rabbit vet.

Thanks for all the links! I’ll look through them. I looked at some of the old threads in the Rabbit Veterinarian List, but I didn’t see any for NY, I guess I didn’t look close enough, sorry.

There is a place about an hour and thirty minutes from that county called Specialized Care for Avian & Exotic Pets. I’ve went there and they did great for me. One of the rabbit’s I raised had her family take her there to get her spayed. She recovered great and is doing really well!

I just finished looking through every link and address. The closest one is 1 hour away and it’s approximately $400 for spay or neuter. The one that @dogwoodblossoms suggested is actually almost 2 hours away from my house. Distance wouldn’t bother me for a great vet, but sadly I’m not old enough to drive so anywhere I go my parents would have to drive me. I will continue looking around my area though. Finding a rabbit savvy vet that's affordable, even if you can drive, is really a challenge. I looked for months before deciding to bite the bullet and spend gazillions on a really good local vet. I'm an adult but it was actually my mom who talked me into it, saying that I'd really regret it if anything went wrong.

So, I'm wondering... Could you offer to take one of your parents out to lunch, or do some extra help around the house, in exchange for the ride? Just a thought.

We are keeping the 2 hour away one in mind, we’re going to call at some point and get a price range first, but we wanted to try a little harder to find a good local one first. They know how much this means to me and are willing to drive some distance if necessary, but they would rather not. Thank you for the suggestions though.

We finally found a vet that is experienced with rabbits and doesn’t cost a fortune! It’s called Lakeside Veterinary Hospital. We have a friend who got their rabbit neutered there and we brought Bullet in for a pre-neuter checkup last week and they handled him GREAT! He was neutered today and all went well! They sent us home with meloxicam (I hope that I spelled that correctly) to give orally every day for two days every twelve hours starting tomorrow. What is the best way to do this without stressing him out?

My rabbits always loved their meloxicam, but some rabbits won't take it willingly. There are some tips in the link below, on ways to handle a rabbit while giving medication. Remember to always handle carefully, conscious of protecting a rabbit from excessive struggling that could result in spinal injury. And also slowly dispensing of liquids with head in normal upright position, to minimize the risk of aspiration occurring. If in doubt, contact your vet on the proper way to give medication.
