we just reccently got a rabbit, from afriend he's about 5 years old and in that time theynever one clipped his nails, now of course we have nailclippers because of our dogs and guinea pigs from before, butI couldn't clip his nails because the blade was completely dull, andwe're actually going to get one tomorrow(a new blade) I thought itcould wait but when we let him loose in our back yard to stretch hislegs, his nails started to fall off( but only when he runs) They'llbleed than they'll just fall off and he bleeds for awhile..I need toknow if he'll be ok, like will they grow back?.... We want to take himto the vet, but I dont want to go and turn out he's alright and getstuck with a huge bill. I'm sorry I didn't cut his nails sooner...(poorguy) but can anyone tell me?..It would be a big help! Thanks!

Hi there and welcome!

How bad is it bleeding? If just a few nails were ripped off and thebleeding has stopped, he should be fine. Keep an eye on himand apply pressure if its still bleeding.

How are the rest of his nails now? Do you have a toe nail clipper soyou can trim them or are they too bad to trim with a clipper? If I wereyou, I would trim down any of them that are too long (trim them down tothe quick, but make sure you dont hit the quick or he will bleed somemore).

If the nail was just torn off, it should grow back.

Please keep us posted!

PS. heres a good thread where Carolyn described how to cut a rabbit's nails:

Hey guys thanks, for the help I was reallyworried. Yeah the bleed has stopped, and he doesn't seem to notice it,and it's I think the most 4. not on the same foot. And I trimmed theones that were left with toe nails clippers but I couldn't get as muchas should off because the nail was just a little thicker than theclippers. But yeah he's doing fine and thanks for the reply..I wasworried! And thanks for the links, they were helpful.

Thats what we're here for!

Im glad to hear he's doing okay. Please feel free to stick around thesite..its a very great resource for rabbit owners. You can even createa blog for your little man to keep us updated on how he's doing.

Again, welcome!

Poor guy. He must not have been getting any attention or exercise at all.:( At least he's in good hands now!

For future reference, you can help the blood clot in a broken orcut-too-short nail by dabbing a little flour or cornstarch on it.

Is that your new bun in your avatar? He looks gorgeous! What's his name?

Thanks for the info, I was actually wonderingabout what todo incase of cut-too-short nails, it's happened in thepast with our guinea pigs and I was never to sure what to do, that'llbe helpful with my new bunny. And yes that's him in my new av, it's notthat great of a pic I'll get a better one. The people we got him from, kept changing his name so many times that everyone just called himbunny, but we've decided on Barnabe( Barn-naa-Bee) I think thats howyou spell it...And thanks, he is very cute but a little anti-social, sowe're slowly starting to handle him more and more, and he's taken quitea liking to our 2 dogs, which he was before terrified of.
