Hi! I am writing for my granddaughter as she is in need of help immediately! Her little lionhead has begun to pee and poop everywhere but in her litter box. She has been doing this now for about 6 months and we have no idea why. Willow was confined to the bedroom and it was not a problem. Then they decided to let her have free run of the house. She only pees or poops in the bedroom so is it possible that by giving her free run of the house, she now considers the bedroom her litter box? Please help if you have any ideas.

Is she spayed? I think it may have been too much space too soon. It may be good to keep her in the room again and retrain her, then only allow her to one room at a time and make sure she keeps using her litter box. Can you post a picture of her litterbox area? If she is not spayed it will be harder to litterbox train her if this started happening after she hit puberty. Plus she should be spayed to eliminate the risk of uterine cancer. 80% in unspayed females after the age of 4.
Thank you for responding to my plea. I had the same thought. She was fine until she was given free run of the house. Yes she is spayed for almost 2years now. I will give my daughter the info from you as I truly believe Willow was given too much freedom too soon and got confused. She has had a lot of change in her sleeping arrangements which I am sure contributed to the problem.
I don't have a picture but her litter box is in my granddaughter's bedroom. She doesn't use the litter box at all and not really interested in her hay. The box is large enough and shouldn't be the problem.
Would you recommend her to a small space again? My daughter is at her wits end but not liking the idea of confining her again.

Yes, confine her to your grandaughter's bedroom and once she has become relitter trained then you can open up to the hallway. Then to another bedroom or the living room, but only one room at a time. Maybe also have more than one litterbox, just put them in her favorite spots to pee at. Oh, and stray poops are to be expected even if she perfectly litterbox trained. Rabbits also like to eat and use the bathroom at the same time so her hay should go directly into the litterbox, and if she isn't too keen on the type of hay you are giving her try other kinds. I don't know what type of litter is being used but horse stall pellets are my favorite, absorb urine and smell really well.

May I ask how old bunny is ?
This happened to my bun, I used to use a normal cat litter tray which was perfect up until about a year ago maybe not even that, so I downsized to a kitten litter tray which worked for a short time but then I noticed he was peeing behind the sofa and even right next to his tray !! I asked my vets for advice This is what they recommend- get a cheap very shallow baking tray that has just a small lip on it, if your bun is an old bun they may be finding it difficult to get in and out of.
It really works !! My bunny is 10yrs and almost 10 months and still loving living the life of luxury lol. I use cling film over it (helps stop sliding buns) then some newspaper and shredded paper but that’s what I use in the toilet area of his hutch, I would recommend using whatever you would normally use in the litter box xx

K Bunny, Thank you for the pictures and your advice. Thank you also to Augustus & Hazel Grace for your help and advice. Willow is a little lionhead and she is almost three years old. She has also become very distant and not friendly. It seems like her personality has completely changed. She isn't aggressive but just wants to hide behind the couch. Her running and binking hasn't stopped so her health seems good. I know this does happen after being spayed but it has been two years since that was done. I will suggest a different litterbox as well as giving her less area.
I told my daughter and granddaughter the advice you all gave me and they are going to begin that immediately. I will let you know how it goes. Thank you again both of you for your response and help. I have my own little mini lop and she is the light of my life. She is 2 1/2 years and I love her to pieces. Her personality changed also after being spayed but she has begun to respond to our loving her. Naturally the treats help.
