Hey Everyone,

Well this morning I decided to get up bright and early and go to the laundromat to wash all my comforters etc. Like every morning, first thing I do is check on the Bunnies. They both seemed fine, soI went and did the laundry.

When I got back there was Blood all on the Floor of Bandit's cage. I sorta panicked. Opened it up and tried to get him to come to me.

Now if you don't know anything about Bandit or I. Bandit is a bunny that will NOT let me touch him, pet him or pick him up. I adopted him from a friend, and he got beat up by his brother a lot so I have had problems with him trusting me. I've had him since the end of Oct/06. But we're still not getting anywhere with the trust factor.

But anyways I got myself in his cage as much as I could, and tried to get him to come top me, with treats (which he usually will do) he took his cranberry but of course wouldn't come to me. Now the blood is all dry on the cage. But I think it's his right front food, but I could be wrong. It looks like it might be? He has a tiny bit of pink under his ear but I believe that's from stepping in the blood with a back food and scratching under his ear. It's not cut there, he just let me lift his ear and it looks fine. He is hopping around fine, he just left his cage and went in to the living room. Now I'm not sure what to do in a situation like this, because he will NOT let me pick him up or touch him?! He just sat and ate some hay in his cardboard box thing he likes and it's no longer bleeding as there is no where he was just sitting.

I'm sorta a worry wort when it comes to ALL my animals or anything, ANY suggestions? Should I chase him around for a couple hours and try and pick him up to take him to the vet, because it'll definitely take me the rest of the morning to try and do that? Or should I wait and see? I'm at wits end here. I Have NO clue what to do. Please Help!!!

Edit: I should also add, I have no idea what would've cut his foot, there is nothing is his cage that is sharp, I've totally checked it out and can't figure out what it would've been?

Thank you!!!

Hi Crystal! I had the same thing happen once when I had BunBun, after inspecting him, I noticed he had a ripped nail. He must've cought it on part of the shelf in the cage, he had half an upper level. Sounds like that might be what happened. As long as it quit bleeding from what you can tell, he should be fine and will clean it himself. Do you cut his nails? If you do, you could try whatever routine you use to do that and check it out that way.

Thanks for responding Snuffles. Sorta in a panick until ppl start responding. hehe

I do cut his nails. He is due for a nail cutting, that's ALWAYS such an ordeal, because as I said he doesn't like to be touched or picked up at all. But it does look like it has stopped bleeding. He did sit in his box and eat some hay before he came out and there was no blood when he left. Another friend on my msn list that I met on here said the same thing as you just said. Her bunny did the same thing, caught his nail but he was fine, he cleaned it up himself.Bandit was licking it. He came out of his cage and he's now under my bed (I usually keep the door shut when he's out but forgot) he loves it under there and will sit under there for a while. So when he comes out I will try and get him in his towel and take a look.

I guess I shouldn't panick then??

Thanks Again!

Okay well he came out from under the bed. He went back in his cage. It's definately not bleeding anymore. And it is his nail/toe. His left back foot. He wouldn't let me too close but I can see where it was bleeding from. It looks not too bad to me. So I think I'm gonna leave him be for now and try and take a look at it later. It really stresses him out when I try to pick him up I dont really don't want to stress him out too much right now. So maybe when my fiance gets home he can hold him for me while I get a closer look. He is definately acting normal though. Thank god. And hopping around like crazy.

I just dont know what he would've caught his nail on in his cage. Obviously something though. I'll keep a close eye.

thank you for responding Snuffles. I feel a little better now. My poor little guy.

Glad to hear he's ok! I read this earlier and had a reply written up, but it got eaten when I went to send it. Good advice Snuffles!

I had this happen once before as well. It always looks worse than it is. ;)

Thanks Haley. And yes blood on the cage floor definately scares the crap out of ya hehehe

And I think it did look worst then what it really is. I'll try and get a good look later on. Poor little guy. I hope he's not in pain!

I'm glad he's okay! Those nails really bleed like nobody's business and it scares me every time. It probably stung a bit when the nail broke but he's probably not feeling pain from it any more.

Oh Good!! I was afraid my poor little man was in pain. Although he didn't act like he was in pain. Hopped around and played like normal. And he seems fine this morning too!
