Less than a month ago I adopted a new bunny, Saoirse, from the shelter I volunteer at. She’s only one years old and a total riot.
Last week my husband’s friend came over and our normally very social Saoirse was hiding under the couch and thumping. We thought it was hilarious that she hated him so much. I was out of town for the next two days. Because she’s new we don’t totally know what’s normal for her, I asked my husband if when his friend left if she was running around again. He said yes, she wasn’t binkying but she was out and about and greeting him in the mornings.
When I came home on Monday night I immediately noticed she was off. She went from her cage to under a table and it seemed like she was dragging her leg. Our vet was closed so we took her in first thing in the morning.
Her temperature was 107 degrees! She started losing her balance and flying around in the car. The vet immediately put her in a cage with ice to drive her fever down. It took two days to stabilize her.
It happened so fast. Vet says it was likely bacterial. Possibly e cuniculi or something else. I don’t know of anything that comes on so quickly.
She’s now on pain meds, nausea meds, e cuniculi meds and another antibiotic. She’s on critical care as well because she’s not eating that well. She isn’t very responsive and uses her back legs differently. No head tilt. I hope she’ll regain her personality and legs. I’m concerned the fever left her deaf or mentally different. Maybe it’s the drugs.
Has anyone’s bunny had a fever? What happened?
