I have been looking through threads on home made toys. Bunny people are so inventive! Has anyone managed to make those little grassy mats? They are quite expensive and I wondered if I could weave some out of hay? Has anybody tried that?

I haven't tried that but toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls make great toys, I have bought the toys from the store and they won't even touch them but if I give them a toilet paper roll, OH boy so much fun !

Those mats are relatively cheap. There if you look around you'll be able to find toy parts to put on them. You can use paper rope or sisal. Buy sisal rope from a pet store. I bought my sisal rope from a hardware store and it was labeled as natural but it had a petrolatum smell to it.

I am going to make some too, I find them quite expensive too. I also think that I'd get some straw I have some ideas never bought it actually as I already spend too much on my rabbits and straw wasn't my priority but I think it would be great for toys. Post some pics here when you make it I'd love to see :)

The ones I've seen in shops look quite flimsy actually. I think buns would have them in shreds pretty fast and they wouldn't work out good value for money. I was thinking of using willow twigs to make a firmer edge then weaving across the centre. I just need enough time to sit and fiddle about with it.

Sissy, what country do you live in . I may be able to give you a few online stores where you can get the products for cheaper and make your own toys.

Most pre-made toys are pretty expensive. I would love to know how to make those mats if you find instructions or invent your own. I have taken long sections of hay and braided thick ropes and rings and they seem to like those.

Jenny, it is not so far from braiding ropes to making mats, in my opinion! If you look at those rush mats for humans they are just a long braided rope coiled round and round. They are usually stitched together though, which could be a problem. Well, I'm sure I will figure it out when I have time to sit still!

Also, some natural kitchen placemats are quite suitable for rabbits too and you can have a set of them at price of one. I loved the idea about making them using willow twigs too, I've got a willow fencing and thinking of using twigs just use maybe sisal rope to connect them together, that would be a great mat and chewing toy too. I think so I need to find time and try it, I have everything for it

I tried using the sisal floor mats when we got our first indoor rabbit and within a week they were dug through, stunk of pee and generally looked awful. My girl loved a toy meant for the cat. It was a plastic cage with a bird inside that tweeted everytime you moved the ball. She would pick it up and throw it and try to lay on top of it. I also got a crinkle cat tunnel that was an instant hit with ALL the buns. Buns and other pets seem to love things not meant for them.
