They were an amazing pair, my first set of rabbits. I honestly didnt know that such a small animal could have such a huge impact on my life.

Doofus was my first rabbit, we got him from the county fair in Lebanon, Ohio in 1998, sometime in the summer. We passed by his cage to see a sign on it that said "Free rabbit, talk to Dawn", of course me being the little kid with my dad (and man was he wrapped around my finger), tugged on his shirt and told him that it was free! We ended up talking to Dawn, mainly because my dad was humoring me, and found out that he had a little bump on his lip and they couldnt show him so they were just giving him away. That was sad enough for me, but not enough to convince my dad, until she said that since he was no use to them anymore, if a home wasnt found for him, they were going to eat him. My dad stopped dead in his tracks and ended up taking him home that night. We ended up getting him declawed because he was quite the mess when we first got him, very rowdy and ill mannered. After spending a week in my arms, that was it, we were pals for life. There wasnt a day where he didnt cheer me up and keep me smiling. All through high school college, he even came to see me at my wedding (when I moved to New York I had to leave him with my parents, they brough him out for my wedding). He went through so much in his life, I wish I would have known more about taking care of rabbits when I was with him. He dealt with pnemonia, fleas, going deaf and blind but still being one of the happiest and most affectionate rabbits I have ever met. Things started going downhill very fast for him when he hit his 11th birthday, he ended up losing his balance and none of the vets could find anything wrong. After a week he ended up not being able to use his back legs to balance and would fall over on his side, making a mess of himself and flailing until he got too tired to try to pull himself back up. I spent the last three days with him, about 20 hours a day, only taking about 3 hours away to sleep (while my husband kept him standing). We ended up having to put him down, his quality of life was terrible and I couldnt keep staying up like I did with him. We had a small autopsy done on him, come to find out he had broken both his back legs in between the vet visits. He showed no signs of pain ever and was there to make me smile all the way until the end.

We got Cuddles the year after we got Doofus at the same fair. Her story was a bit different. My mom fell in love with her, she was a beautiful almost deep red color when we got her, only to grow up to be an even more beautiful cream color. After a few years my mom got tired of the responsibility of having a rabbit (after she got a new puppy) and dumped her onto me, which I had no problem with. She was the mother of a litter of 7, 10, 9, 8, and another litter of 9. Only two of those litters did we ever have problems with, but other than that, she was an amazing mother. After I moved out to New York, her and Doofus waited for about a year until my parents brought them both out here as our wedding presents. Then spent the rest of their lives with us and we made sure they were spoiled and happy for the rest of their days. Shortly after we lost Doofus, she ended up getting severe arthritis in her hind legs which we were getting taken care of with Cosiquine which didnt seem to help too well after she pulled a muscle in her right hind leg. Slowly she lost the ability to eat, drink and her breathing was getting very shallow. We did our best to keep her hydrated, holding the bottle for her and giving her water from a bowl, but nothing seemed to help. When we brought her to the vet to see if there was anything we could do, we found out she had a grape sized tumor in her lungs, there was nothing we could do.

I will never forget those buns, they were an amazing pair and will always be my babies, no matter where they are. Here's to you guys. We love you.

They both had such wonderful stories. I am sorry to hear that you lost them. It is a good thing that you came into their lives, though. You were truly their hero.

Binky free, little ones. :rainbow:

Very sorry for your loss--they both sounded like great little fur babies. You can take consolation in the fact that you gave them love and a wonder life. Not all rabbits are that lucky. It is so very hard to have to say goodbye, but they aren't in pain or suffering any longer. Sounds like you have wonderful memories to get you through the tough times. Larry&Nancy
