Hi

Im a new member, i am sorry if this doesnt sound very coherant but i am a little distressed at the moment. My beautiful bunnie Gemma had to be put down last friday after contracting Myxamotois, and Fudge who was in with her i think is now showing signs. I am ashamed to say that they were not vaccinated, but a lesson has been learned and i will never not have them vaccinated again. She had that E Cul parasite that affected her hind legs and she has been as ickly rabbit and been constantly medicated since she was a baby. Field mice and their fleas were the culprut.

She would not let me medicate or feed her, the vet said there was no hope (my vets are lovely caring people, im sorry that not all your experiences have been so good}

What i really want to know is, have any of you successfully nursed a sick bunny with this disease?? I am going to do everything i can. I am taking Fudge to the vets tomorrow, although he had his vaccination i fear it was too late to help him fight.

The vets suggestedgetting some echinacea as well.

I have been ignorant in the past, foolishly thinking MY rabbits wont be exposed.

Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to read this.

Thanks

Poor baby. I'll keep him in my thoughts!

I haven't nursed a myxi bun as I live in the US and we don't have it. There is some info available, though. This has some good info on it.

This is a thread from another member whose rabbits caught myxi. Unfortunately they did not survive, but you might stillget good info from the thread.

What meds has your vet prescribed? I've heard that antibiotics are necessary to prevent secondary infections.

Steam can help him breathe. Your vet might be able to prescribe meds for a nebulizer (delivered by steam to nose), or justuse the steam to help clear the nose out. There's some info on nebulizers here:

Thank you naturestee for your reply and very helpful links.

Fudge's chances are not good but i am not going to let him go easily. I love him so much and it hurts to think he will end up like Gemma. Going to the vets tomorrow after work and will post then.

I wont even put into words what i would like to do to the people that put this disease out there.

The meds they gave me for Gemma was anti inflammatorys i thinkand antibiotics and eye drops, no doubt i will get the same tomorrow. The worse thing about this disease is that they get worse before they get better.

will update you then

Thanks for your kind thoughts

Hi Cheryl13, Binky free little Gemma...............i cried when i read that.

They are adorable creatures and i cant bear to see them so ill. Gonna have to get something for Fudge to live in while he is indoors, he is an adventurous thing and loves getting in everywhere. My home is definately not bunnie proof!

Thanks for your reply and prayers.

I will try and post some pictures of themtomorrow.

Im so sorry to hear about Gemma. I hope and pray that you are able to save Fudge.

Im sure he will love staying indoors with you and being pampered. If you need temporary housing, check out our NIC condos (in the photophile section). You can purchase cheap shelving and just use that for now if you dont want to spend all the money for an indoor cage.

I'll be keeping your little one in my prayers. I know it feels so see your bunny suffer and feel so helpless.

Take care of your little one :pray:He'll need you more than ever now that hisbest friendhas passed.

Binky free at the Rainbow Bridge little Gemma. I can tell you were loved very much

Unfortunately the chances of an unvaccinated rabbit surviving myxi are very slim :( If a rabbit does survive then it will mean 8+ weeks of very intensive nursing and your rabbit will be very sick for those weeks. It's also possible they'll be long term damage to the lungs. The trouble is there is no way to tell from the start how it will go - many people nurse their bunnies for 3-4 weeks before eventually having them pts when they get really bad. I'm not saying this to be horrible (I've lost a rabbit to myxi too) but I think it's important you know what you are letting yourself and your bunny in for.

This lady is currently nursing her two rabbits through it - they have been very sick and they had the benefit of being vaccinated -http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=31787

This lady nursed her bun for 5 weeks before he was pts - http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=32839

The threads should give you some information on the meds that may help.

Good luck with your bunnies. It's a terrible disease :( Perhaps you could ask your local newspaper to print a message telling people myxi is in the area and urging them to vaccinate.
