Hi, we have a 2 yr old lionhead doe who is suffering with a really bad eye infection. It all started at xmas time when we noticed that her eye was runny, we took her to the vet who told us she had conjunctivitis and to apply eye drops twice a day and if this did not work they would look at her tear ducts as they said itcould be possible that they are blocked. The dropsseemed to work for a while then it came back, so we carried on with the eye drops,as advised by our vet but there was no further mention of the ducts. The eye then cleared up until3 weeks ago when i went to her hutch and saw that her eye was very swollen and closed. I rushed her to the vets who said she has a very bad abscess and gave her some pain relief and some antibiotics for the abscess. I had to take her every 2 days to have the antibiotics put in as well as assessing her condition. The swelling had not gone down and the vet said it would be better to take her eye out as she now had a ulcer on the eye. The vet then rang to say that we could go with some stronger eye drops (as we said we would like to save her eye if possible) and to carry on with the pain relief and come back a few days later. When i took her back her eye had not really changed so it was decided that i would carry on the treatment at home for a further week. Her next visit is due on Monday (10th July). The treatment I'm applying is fucithalmic twice a day, hypromellose as many times as poss and also a drop of metacam in the mouth once a day.

My main concernon returningto the vets on Monday, isthey will only suggest removal of her eye, which was the last thing we wanted. Theyalso mentioned that once the eye is removed there will be no guarantee that the infection will not reacur nor that it has been completed cleared . So with this information we are completely at a loss as towhat is the best thing to do for her, as we do not want to prolong her suffering if we are to have her put to sleep after the trauma of the eye removal.

We are desperately looking for some sound advice, as I mentioned above we are unable to know what to do for the best.

Many thanks in advance.

Has the vet ruled out entropian as a cause of the corneal abscess? An operation can correct this and save the eye.

If he's ruled out other causes, I would look for a second opinion before making the final decision of removing the eye.
