I have a 4 month old little polish rabbit who is getting neutered next month at around 5 months. Should I get him a cage mate once the hormones are out of him or are rabbits fine alone?

I'm interested in this too. I'm thinking of getting Dortmund a girl friend a month or so after easter. By that time I should have figured out the whole Rabbit thing and people will probably be getting rid of their easter rabbits so the shelters should have a good selection.

It depends. If a rabbit is housed outdoors, I would say definitely get a bondmate so they don't get lonely (and bored). If a rabbit is housed indoors, gets plenty of attention and out-of-cage time, then most rabbits will do just fine as single rabbits. There are the exceptions, but generally, they can do fine as singles.

You can wait and see how he is a few months after his surgery. There is no rush in finding a bondmate.

Can you financially afford a bondmate for your neutered or spayed bun for the next 8-10 or 12+ years. Vet care, supplies, interaction?

You are right that thousands of rabbits get surrendered for various reasons; including can't afford, kids won't take care of "it", lost interest, too busy or don't have time, allergic ... // Certain shelters post the reasons in positive terminology to tone down the reasos of the surrendering humans.
