Hello I’m new! And looking to know more about cute little bunnies!
Do rabbits need vaccinations? If so how much do they cost?

The vaccines are not widely available in the US yet. Apparently a few vets in the Southwest are willing to try to import the vaccines from overseas since there has been recent outbreak in the wild population (couple in domestic).

The UK and Australia have required vaccinations.

Found this on House Rabbit Society (updated may 25, 2020)
  • There is no vaccine currently widely available to vets in the US or Canada.
    • Canadian vets in British Columbia near Vancouver and Washington state vets near the northern border have successfully worked with regulatory agencies and have gotten special permission to import European vaccines.
    • May 2020: Some rabbit-savvy veterinarians in states affected by the Southwest outbreak are importing vaccines for their rabbit patients. If you live in one of these states, please contact your veterinarian to inquire about vaccination.
  • Veterinarians seeking to import vaccine in an area with an RHDV outbreak must have a USDA-accredited vet reach out to their State Veterinarian.
  • Currently, State Veterinarians/USDA is requiring a documented case of RHDV in their state before approving special import permits for the vaccine.

Ok thanks! I’ll keep that in mind, I was worrying about the costs, because vaccinations and vet trips are usually expensive, but that’s good!

My vet charges $100 each bun each year for RHDV. Nothing is required in BC but because we love our buns and want the best for them..........

Does that include annual exam fee? I'm planning a trip with my buns to BC to get vaccinated when I'm back in the area and you love to plan the cost

In England you need to get your rabbits vaccinated. We have two vaccinations for our rabbits, a combined vaccination of myxo/rhd and an additional vaccination of rhd2. I have a vet plan that covers both annual vaccinations but other than that, vaccinations (with my vet) would cost £45 each.

Here in sweden we have one vaccination for all three which came in may it cost 45$, while doing as Apollo’s slave do it cost between 80 to 100$ depends which vet I vaccinate at. Myself haven’t tried the new combination vaccinations for the bunnies but will try it next year.

I think it’s necessary to vaccinate the bunnies if you have the diseases but in the USA the RVHD 2 have just started to spread. While where I am we had it for many years. I always vaccinate before spring and summer starts, so my bunnies will have the extra protections ☺️

I live in a risk area with hares and wild bunnies.

Here in Estonia i'm not sure if vaccinations are mandatory, but we like to do it anyway just to sweep off the risks.
The breeder we got both our buns from, although at different times, (this year and last with only a couple days difference)
Said that all the young rabbits' primary vaccines were already taken care of. He said that they got the shot 40 days after birth. I wonder what vaccine would that be. He said that the next vaccine should be done about a year after the rabbit's birth.
When we went to vaccinstion with Musti 28.01.2020 he was given myxomatosis vaccine. I have yet to look up if buns in my area would need any other vaccins.

It includes a wellness check, and it is of course in Cdn$. You will have to check the regulations on bringing buns across the border. The vets I know that are rabbit specialists are
Dr. Upjohn at Head to Tail in Maple Ridge Head To Tail Veterinary Hospital - Veterinarian in Maple Ridge, B.C.
Dr. Chow in Burnaby Team — Capitol Hill Animal Hospital
And then there's crossing the border with Covid-19 restrictions....
A bit of a hassle for you but you are doing the right thing 👍
It's a bit of a hassle and I won't be able to head up to Vancouver until October, so I'm hoping the restrictions will be easier to navigate, but it's super important to me that I prevent the stuff that's easy to prevent and do everything I can to prevent painful conditions! Thank you so much!
