So I woke up this morning to Dortmund making weird noises. He was in his litter box, buried under his own hay and litter (I’d fed him and changed his litter an hour before), trying with his front paws to dig through the plastic bottom of the box, and was making a weird grunting noise and breathing heavily.

Is this normal?

My bun sometimes dug into his own litterbox and grunted too, though his breathing was normal and he doesn't exhibit such behaviour. How old is your bun? My rabbot only did that while maturing.

I currently see no need for concern, he will grow out of it when he gets older.
Maybe someone else with more knowledge would know to give better advice. Was it only one-time-occurrence? If not, then how often does he do this?

It was just this morning. And I was less concerned with his noises than I was with the fact that he had managed to bury himself in hay and paper bedding. He is a strange and demented creature.

worry not-many bunnies are as demented, if not even more. My bun randomly decided, to race around his enclosure, using my legs as an emergency brake-he collided into me with full speed, turned around and leaped onto the tree rack in fluidness, like it was completely normal. He wouldn´t eat the fresh hay at all when he saw a bale just a couple meters across the room. Oh no, he had to have the private access of all the best bits and pieces straight from the source. He´s calmed down on that part though. So don´t fret-my bun is also a trickster!

I’m not sure but he could be developing an urge to mate if you haven’t neutered your rabbit.
Either that or he’s going through the normal temporary phase of maturity.

That was the case with my dear giant bun-he wasn´t and most likely won´t be neuterd, but other than humping my hand a couple of times, huffing and digging his litter sometimes, that was just about the end of his maturity bout. yes, he was hyperactive, biting bars at that time, out of excitement, but now he acts like every other neutered bunny i´ve read of on the forum- no spraying, biting, humping or fighting anywhere.
so my parents see no reason for him to get fixed unless i plan to move out many years later, take him with me and get him a friend. by that time, however, he will be what is considered bunny middle age though, so i guess that is that.

anyway, my bun had an easy, short transfer from kithood into adulthood.

Anyone else notice strange rabbit behaviors more around the changing of the seasons? The change to winter & summer always has my buns acting more weird than normal. My buck always gets in a digging frenzy (especially in litter boxes) in the late spring, but never does so any other time.

Perhaps European rabbits have digging instincts kick in going into winter 0r something...

It's hard to tell in my case because i haven't been monitoring his behaviour in seasons. He seems to act bonkers all year round.
