Dig Box

My mini rex loves to dig and he typically digs on carpet or blankets. As a Christmas gift I thought he may enjoy a Dig Box. How would I make one for him? Is there a way to make it so it won't make a mess when he plays in it? Would he possibly think it's a litter Box? I don't want him to get confused and start using the bathroom outside of his litterbox.Thanks in advance

I made one for my rabbits, filled up huge box with straw and made not too big openings to go in. And of course they use it as a toilet.. maybe some other choice of digging material would be more suitable. But i think that my rabbits still would think that its their litter box.

My rabbits are indoors and I use a cardboard box with an entry and exit hole cut in the sides, high enough to contain the digging contents, but low enough they can hop into it. And I line the bottom with several layers of newspaper then rip up and crumple some of it to get them started digging and ripping it up.

It does get peed in, but they aren't in there all the time so it doesn't get overly soiled too fast. And when it starts to get too soiled I can usually just pull out the crumpled newspaper and layers on the bottom, and throw it out and reline the box. Sometimes the box gets soiled and I just toss it out and make a new one. Not all rabbits will decide their digging box is also a litter box. Maybe you'll luck out and yours won't want to.

You could just get a large tall plastic box and dump a bag of sterilised topsoil in it. If it's tall enough there won't be much mess. If they won't jump in it you could put a platform next to it.
