I just got an email from the grocery store saying that the cabbage I bought for Dortmund on Saturday is being recalled for Cyclospora. I’ve already fed him from this apparently tainted cabbage. How worried should I be. Does this virus even affect rabbits — i.e. some viruses are species dependent. According to the Email, it might take 7 days for symptoms to show up.
that said I threw out the uneaten cabbage already.
From what I've read online Cyclospora affects the intestines and it is caused by a tiny parasite called Cyclospora cayetanensis. It's usually caught from eating raw fruit and vegetables contaminated with human faeces.
I tried looking at if it affects rabbits but I would only find medical research documents that show different results, so I'm not 100% sure if it affects rabbits, i guess you could call your vet and ask about it? Maybe they'll give you a treatment that might help?
In humans common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms, so if any of your family ate the cabbage be wary of this.
In rabbits I would recommend feeding him lots and lots of hay to keep his gut moving, try adding herbs or treat hays so he is encouraged to eat more.
I am extremely sorry if this doesn't help! I did a quick google and checked out a few pages and wrote down what I saw, maybe
@JBun can help?
Hope your bun is okay <3
