I was originally going to get two Flemish giants but the rescues keep telling us that they have horrible litter habits. I really want one but my parents can’t tolerate having poop all over the house. I have a few questions
1. Do you think that they would poop anywhere or is it that they will poop right outside the litter box because they can reach hay easily?
I put a thing on the side to stop them from eating the hay and not pooping in the box.
2. My second question is about getting smaller rabbits. I feel like with smaller rabbits I or my parents might accidentally step on them! Or they will escape my house during their free roam time.... or I won’t have any idea where they went. I have a big house.

I need a second opinion pls:)
Thanks

I've never before heard that Flemish are worse than other rabbits with potty habits. I do know they take longer to grow (being so big) and so they typically can't be neutered until an older age than the smaller rabbits. Not neutered means bad potty habits (usually). Once neutered, I am not aware that they are harder to train.

As for stray poos, that is pretty common for all rabbits. It is the rare rabbit that is ever 100% with their poos. Thankfully, their (adult) poos are dry and odorless and easy enough to sweep up.

Even free roam rabbits often have limits as to where they can go. For example, one place we lived, the rabbits had the whole downstairs except for an office on that level. They were blocked from going upstairs at all.

In another house, they were confined to a large dining/kitchen area with hallway and laundry room.

Another home they were blocked from all bedrooms and offices.

So you don't have to let them roam your entire house.

Another option, if you're leery about Flemish is to go with another large-ish rabbit. French lops, American, Californian and a number of other breeds are about 10+ lbs.

I’m planning on getting a pair of Californian mixed rabbits if not Flemish giants. They say that because they are so large they don’t go into the box. I have bought a cement tray and put a grid on the side. I’m not sure

We gave a flemish. Only potty issues we have had is before he got fixed he would pee/spray my sons bed.
He actually litter trained the same day we brought him home b

I wouldn't worry about stepping on a smaller bunny. They will make sure you don't forget them! 😂 Also potty training depends on the bunny. My rabbit isn't spayed due to circumstances and she only has a few stray poos here and there. It isn't a problem. Anyway, when you deside to get a rabbit, you make a 10 year commitment to do work for that animal. I've always had many animals around me though so it's no problem. Rabbit poo is really easy to clean up, which is good news.

Right I know that any rabbit will occasionally poop somewhere but with the flemishes they have, they poop all over the pen. I emailed them about the gate on the side and they still seem skeptical.

If they have multiple rabbits, they could be territory marking all over the pen. I would think that if there is just one, once he gets used to a new area, that the bunny wouldn't feel that need to continue marking his space. (they always territory mark when first brought to a new place)
