Hi!
I have recently adopted a friend's bunny, whom I believe is about 4. He came to me with a hay bale, and some pellets for his diet. I was told he eats his hay, but I haven't had to change his hay feeder fully for weeks. I have hay spots all over the room, but nothing has disappeared. He will eat greens and pellets, and poops fine. Anyway, I find if I give him cilantro, he eats a lot of hay after, as well as being hyper. Is this ok? As long as he's eating hay, right? It's been only a few weeks with him. Thanks.

As long as the cilantro isn't causing digestive upset, it's a good healthy treat for rabbits.

Are you overfeeding pellets and/or any high carb treats? This can affect how much hay a rabbit will eat. Usually the recommended pellet amount is around 1/8-1/4 cup per 5 lbs of body weight, for pet rabbits. And provided a pile of good grass hay the size of the rabbits body, is also consumed per day. This is essential or there's a risk of GI stasis if a rabbit still won't eat hay when other foods are reduced. Maybe talk to your friend if you can, and find out pellet amounts that were fed each day, and the brand and type of hay they fed. Some rabbits are more picky about what hay they like and will eat.

If in doubt about diet or health issues, consult with a knowledgeable rabbit vet.

I give what he's used to for pellets, it looks like a quarter cup in the am and another in the pm.

My bunny adores cilantro! She started eating a lot more hay when I reduced her pellets. She gets 2 tablespoons twice a day.
I've tried to make him wait for his pellets this last week. I'll wait an extra two hours after morning time and see if he'll go for hay. He just gets grumpy and nibbles me. He doesn't go for the hay. At least when I'm looking. I might try giving a smaller amount of cilantro first thing in the AM and before "dinner", and let him move on to hay before I give the pellets.

All of our six rabbits love cilantro. Some might eat their Italian parsley, first; but, they eventually eat every last particle of cilantro.
