Bunny with nasty ear mites

so one of my bunnies Atlas has earmites i had been treating them but not enough i thought i only had to do it like once a month but, i was so wrong they got terrible and yesterday we spent a long time cleaning his ears trying to get them out after my mom read it can hurt really bad and they will scream but we stopped whenever he was acting like it hurt and then fed him some treats to make him happy and put him back in his cage with the treats and he groomed for the rest of the night. To treat his ears i had been using coconut oil and water and dropping it in his ears and it worked for a little bit, what do you reccomend NOTE none of my other bunnies have them and i am keeping him away from the others so he can't spread them and i will start treating all of their ears just in case!

Have you had an actual diagnosis of earmites from a vet? Or is this just your assumption? I suggest you use actual ear mite medication, if it is actually ear mites, such as spot on ivermectin. Do not “clean out” the ears it can be very dangerous if you damage the inside of the ear canal. Don’t just start pouring things into the ears willy nilly! Take them to a vet if you think they need further treatment or you could do more harm than good!

I agree with the above. For mites we would use ivermectin in the ears but I don’t remember how much or how often. I would recommend a vet.

I would not rely on coconut oil for sure or mineral oil.

At this point you really need to take your rabbit to the vet as there is a good chance a secondary bacterial infection could have developed.

For future reference, it's always best to treat things like this with the appropriate medication from the start, to avoid worsening of the disease and other possible complications. Depending on the severity, there's a chance your rabbit could have permanent damage. Also, as mentioned, never remove the crusts. Not only is it painful, but it can damage the tissue and is also a futile effort until the actual problem(the mites) is dealt with. And once that is appropriately treated, the mites die and the crusts normally fall out on their own. At the most I would only help remove already loosened crusts with no attachment, that you can easily see in the upper part of the ear. Never put anything in or try and get down inside of the ear.

I can confirm it is earmites it has the nasty crusts throughout the ears and started using another mix that is really helping his ears! Tea tree oil + olive oil. I am gonna save up money to get him some real medicine and or take him to the vet, thanks for the help. (sorry i didn't reply sooner i was traveling) because you guys were helpful enjoy this photo of one of the babies my precious bunno's have produced (litter 1 of 2)
