Help Needed

Tennessee

American Sable - seal point - Approx 5 lbs

Vet sais about 2 yrs old

Female

Don't know prior history.

She appeared on our Patio 5 weeks ago (abandoned ?) and I took her in. Took her to a bunny vet on Friday and she got a clean bill-of-health.

Keren (toy poodle) and I am concerned about Bugsy. She lays on her tummy with head up.

Every morning when we come out to the garage (man cave), Bugsy is very excited to see us, wants a treat and some petting. This morning she stayed in her nesting box, not moving.

I did reach in and pet her in the nesting box. No response from her. Her litter box is very clean where all other mornings is has been heavily used - poop & pee. Not this morning A tiny bit of pee, and less poop than normal

It's been three hours now and she just quietly moved over to the litter box and parked there. I offered water and she only took a sip. Doesn't look like she ate any of her pellets last night. That's the only drink she has had. Not eating. I have been out here with her for 6 hours now.

When we went in the house at 4:30 yesterday afternoon, she was fine. I gave her a little treat before leaving and she enjoyed it.

Clay kitty litter

Aspen bedding

eats bunny food pellets, timothy, and treats are fresh carrots and honey/seed log tidbits. Caged so no access to anything else to eat.

Lethargic, but no drooling, wet face, wet nose, ruby eyes, coughing or sneezing. Breathing normal.

It's now 7 1/2 hours and she is in litter box again and and appears to be straining to go (pee?) without success.[/b]

Has not been outdoors since I've had her. 5 weeks.

We have a toy poodle that is in good health and they have been playing together for 5 weeks.

I would appreciate any help that can be offered.

Thank you

It sounds like she might have a blockage. If she has been eating the clay kitty litter, it could block her intestines. You need to syringe her some water, lots of it, get some pumpkin syringed into her, give her some baby colic drops to get the gas moving, and if at all possible get her to a vet ASAP. Bunnies can die from this so it is not something to fool around with. They will give her fluids and mobility drugs to get that gut moving. Soft tummy massage can help too. Check the library on the forum on GI status for lots and lots of helpful info.

Thanks for "No clay litter". I'll do a search on what to use.

I have given her water and pumpkin through a syringe and went and got colic dorps and am giving her that too. I plan to take her to the vet in the morning. I live way out in the country and don't have access to vet hospital.

Ireally appricate the help.

Hope Bugsy's doing better. The advice given above is good and there's also an excellent overview of treatment for GI problems given in several other recent threads in the Infirmary. If you scroll down to "Urgent Questions" you'll find the most recent.

If you scroll farther to "Help!Harvey's Acting Like He's in Pain" you'll find more. That's about a similar scare I had with my bunny several weeks ago. Harvey turned out to be fine and there's good information there, as well.

It's terrible to see them in pain. My heart goes out to you. Sending good thoughts for a happy ending.

You need to make sure that you give her lots of timothy, orchard grass or oat hay. They need this to keep their intestines moving. Most people on line use recycled newspaper litter like yesterdays news or what ever other brand is out their. Some use wood pellets, check online to see what is safe as you don't want to use pine pellets that you buy at the pet store. You may need to get her started on some benebac probiotics, not yogurt to help get the flora going again. Keep us posted. Absolutely NO CAT HAIRBALL STUFF as that will just coat the mess and not allow the water to be absorbed so that it moves.

We are hoping that Bugsy can get back to normal
It's good that you syringed some water and pumpkin
Lots of hay!!

Bugsy will only drink from syringe and if I hand feed her thimothy she will eat a few pieces and refuses to eat any more.

She is spending about half her time in the litter box. She just got out and had only passed a couple of poop balls.

I'm so upset. I'm going to stay with her all night to keep giving her water and pumpkin, and the colic med every three hours.

I just hope she can hang on until the vet opens at 8 in the morning.

Thanks to everyone for their support.

You're doing the right thing to stay with her. Your presence will help her to make it through:) Keeping her moving, keeping her hydrated, keeping her eating, keeping her warm, talking to her, gentle tummy rubs, petting her (even if she doesn't seem to want it) will help her make it through...sending love and prayers. You're a great bunny parent:)

Let us know how she is when you get back from the vet!
I've been following this thread since you first put it up, and I think you're amazing for taking on a stray bunny! And just like everyone else said, you're a great bunny parent.
Good luck!

Oh no, poor Bugsy! You are wonderful for staying with her, that really helps. Rabbits feel abandoned very easily when they don't feel well and tend to give up hope, which is why I never let them stay over night with the vet if it can be avoided. You are doing all the right things.

Please let us know how things go and what the vet decides.

Bugsy and I made it through the night. Were at the vet this morning when they opened. We were lucky that the Bunny Vet was there (He is not there every day).

They are keeping her for the day. Will give her fluids, pain meds, and try to get her bowels moving. They asked that I bring her timothy and pellets in - done.

Will post an update as soon as I have any more information.

Again, thanks to everyone for the help and support.

2:45 PMMonday - The vet just called and said Bugsy does have GI Stasis.

He said hewenthomeand got some frozen blueberries he had and made a puree to give her for stimulation. Just starting a second round of fluids and will keep her at least through tomorrow.

Alsosaid he could not feel a blockage and her status has not changed either way. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
