I may have the opportunity in the near future to swap one of my Siamese Smoke offspring against a sable marten of good quality. As I eventually will need some new blood I like the idea although I'd prefer to stick to just siamese sables/smokes.
Is it a good idea to mix the patterns?

I guess it depends on what's behind the sable martins.

Evan's rabbit register says no to Sable Point/Sable Martin.
It also keeps saying that you'll get lots of seal martins, which would make sense. However, when I look at it myself, it looks like the cross would be okay, other than the seal's you'll get.

Personally, I'm always willing to try something once. Just like the stupid idea of crossing a black with a sable point. I know what evan's says I'll get, but I want to see what real life brings. Worse comes to worse, I get a group of brood black animals with scattered white hairs, that can throw torts. I'm very interested in seeing what happens. XD

Anywho... I'd wait for Pam to answer. X3

I vaguely remember that there was something about an increase of white hairs. I wonder if that could be bred out again though?

A lot depends on the breed: what varieties are accepted and how much consideration is given to color when judging.

It really helps to include the breed you are talking about in the posts.

Marten tends to be the more dominant pattern. So you would get them in your litters. And you would have to watch for White hairs especially on the tail and underams. Also putting sable in you would have to be careful in case it makes the smoke's to dark.

Personally I think you would want a rew that is bred out of a litter of smoke to keep them the right colour but I'm just going on what I have been told by breeders

Thanks, yes it's ND I breed. It's just hard to come across good type in Ireland and I may have to wait till next year or so to go back over to England or just stick with my own four. I was just wondering if the new rabbit has excellent type if it's worth messing up the colour a bit

Type is far more important than color. I'll mess up a litters color to get typey animals that I can then use to linebreed back to whatever color I want. (Like the sable point to black litter that's in the oven. Or the sable point to siamese sable litter(all sables/seals, might I add), when I much prefer sable points over sables.)
