Last Sat I was picking up a newer male shelter stray who I named Cadbury and felt a huge lump on his underside. I turned him over and discovered a large sac in the area of the testicle with a hole underneath. The whole thing looked infected so I showed it to some of the caretakers. One of them thought it was a very strange looking bot fly. We called the vet on call (happens to be my rabbit vet) and met him at the clinic.

It was a botfly on his testicle and it was extremely infected..the testicle was just full of pus which the vet repeatededly flushed with saline. Instructions were to flush the hole 2x per day and then squirt antibiotic ointment in the sac and massage the area. By the 2nd day Cadbury would not allow me to do the flushing so I applied ointment to the fly hole. It is now July5th about 12AM and I am up looking at Cadbury feeling pleased that he is healing and also feeling proud that the shelter let me take him home.

The shelter won't let a volunteer foster a pet but the funny part is that I was the only one in the place (except one employee) who even knows how to handle a rabbit. They let me take him home because no one else could do the procedures. :DAnyway I feel quite good about myself and decide to pick Cadbury up and pet him for awhile.I felt a lump under his neck and I KNEW HE HAD ANOTHER BOTFLY. So it is 1 AM and I am struggling with him as with this one he didn't want me near it. I got a look at the larvae, saw it was brown and big (mature one) and immediately remembered how Lissa lost Lenci. I tried for half the night to get the larvae out myself as I had observed the doctor. No luck it just went further into the hole.

I really stressed out Cadbury but (I am confessing this) i almost could not stand having that thing in him and almost could not stop myself from repeated attemps to get the sucker out. I went to bed about 4AM and got up at 6am as I had him at the vet when they opened at 7:30 Am. They got it out and put it in formaldyhyde. It is huge. I wish so much I could post a picture of it.It is about as long as that string of dots and extremely thick. The vet put him on Baytril just in case more show up. Anyway he is just fine tonight and I am very very tired.

Sorry this is so long. I will be keeping Cadbury for at least another week and am frightened of falling in love.

Removing a bot fly from a rabbit's testicle was probably one of the most gross things I've ever had to do. The poor guy also had one on the inside of his leg.

I really feel for you (and Cadbury!)

Hang in there!

Trivia -- Did you know that there is a species of bot fly larvae that specifically grow in the testicles of squirrels

Pam you can relate to this. :DThe strange thing is that the other testicle was retracted and we didn't even know if he was neutered. The sac didn't look like a testicle until about 2 days after the larvae was removed and the other testicle descended again (in other words he isn't neutered). I did read something about squirrels getting bot flies when I was on the computer last night but i didn't know it was a testicular bot fly...I'm glad I'm not a male squirrel!!!:D

Wow, with all the talk here about poor abused rabbits, we sometimes forget how abusive sweet Mothernature can be. The Humane Society would lock her up and throw away the key for that one.

And Angieluv, that was a wonderful thing you did for Cadbury!

OMG! I didn't know there was a second one! I saw you post about the first larvae on Etherbun. So what did the vet say about the testicle wound closing up?

I hope that's all there is.:? Poor Cadbury!

Don't ask:)

It is kind of like when it is quiet at the hospital (where I used to work) You never say it is quiet that is forbidden because you know what will happen next.

Wow....glad to hear he is doing better.

Pamnock - is there something specific you need to do to get the botfly off of a testicle or any body part for that matter? I've never encountered this problem but would like to be prepared if it should every happen.

The one in the testicle came out rather easily with tweezers (probably because the skin is so thin).

The can be difficult buggers to get out of other areas because they retract into their hole. Sometimes they can be sucked out with a syringe.

Care needs to be taken not to damage the larvae because toxins can be released into the rabbit's system.

When I first found thr larvae on Cadbury's neck it was actually part way out of the hole.....if I had been more experienced I probably should have gotten it with the tweezers then. The more time I spent fooling around (bunny kept moving) the larvae went way down in the hole..there was no way to get a hold of it. There must be a better instrument than a tweezers. Something with a long thin nose without asharp end? I was also afraid of puncturing it. Cadbury is fine now but will be here for about 7 days because he gets Baytil.

Pliars :) I don't know if you've got the right tools but you can get very small pliars that would be perfect for the job! If you go out looking for them computer tools (you can actually get them from the dollar store) would be the right size.

Be careful when removing botflies. If the larva breaks, it can get into the rabbits' blood stream and release poisonous toxins. At least that is what I've been told. That is the reason I never touched the one on Lenci's neck.

I hope Cadbury is doing well.

Lissa.. Cadbury is fine now and I have no idea how I can take him back to the shelter when he is well. The only reason I was in a frenzy to get it out that night was I could tell it was mature because of the color and size and I was terrified it would kill him before I got there. Thank God he's OK. I know other people who's rabbits died from bots so I really would like to learn to do it correctly

Unless he's gotten too deep turn them sidways (so they are parallel to the skin) and pressdown around the hole then grab'em :)
