My male bunny has been neutered since last September (he was 6 months old at the time). Since then, he's been fine. I went to look down there today to check his scent glands and noticed a dark spot on the tip of his penis. I moved the skin around the opening to get a better look (since it doesn't stick out as much as it did when he wasn't neutered), and there looked like a red substance, which I can only guess is blood, coming out of there when I moved the skin around. I stopped because the bunny started to shake a little. He's been hopping around fine and dandy. He's gone to the bathroom, but I can't tell if it's the urine that's red because of the type of litter in his box (dark gray). And it's not a constant bleeding...just a little. Or I should say, a little red. The area also looks larger than it used to, but not really red and puffy. Any suggestions of what this might be? Is it usually harder to see the penis clearly after neutering, or is the area swollen? Could the little dot just be a scab from him cleaning himself down there and accidentally hurting himself? Just so you know, I'm calling a vet tomorrow morning, but feel the need to ask before I hit the hay to get other rabbit owner opinions. Thanks a lot guys!

Edit: a photo can be taken and provided if needed. Thanks.

There are a lot of bloodvessels close to the surface of the penis, and brusing is not uncommon. I would keep an eye on it for any changes. If everything else appears fine (eating, drinking, poop normal and not straining to urinate), then I don't think a vet visit is necessary at this point.

Watch forthe bruising is getting worse, swelling, puss or the rabbit appearing to be havinga difficult time urinating.

Thanks for the comments minilop and pam!

Update: Last night, Driz and I were snuggling on the couch. He found a comfy spot on a pillow by my head. Then a bug must have jumped off him and onto me. It was gross. I think it was a flea, but it seemed pretty big.Should I let the vet know about the bug (and if it was a flea or tick, are the meds for bunnies in that area)? Could the bug have been causing the problem? Also, I went to go wake him up this morning (by removing the blanket from the top of his cage). He usually gets up and runs to get food (or at least stands up so I can pick him up out of the cage). Today he just sat in his litter box. And he seems to hunch when he sits in it. I made an appointment with the vet but could only get in tomorrow at 6PM. I hope that is ok to wait till tomorrow. Thanks again guys. I hope to have a healthy, happy bunny tomorrow! :bunnydance:

With so little info on the bug, it's impossible to guess what it might have been. Best thing to do would have been to catch it and have the vet identify it. I doubt it had anything to do with the broken blood vessels on the buck's penis.

Yeah, I wish I could have caught it. I had it for a moment and tried to put it in a bag, but it got away and, although I spent all night looking (because I'm weird like that), I couldn't find it. I guess I'll let him (the vet)know there was a bug just in case. Maybe he can check Drizzle for other ones.

Thanks Pam.

Drizzle seems to be hopping around quite a bit now like normal...we'll see how he is next time he goes to the potty.

Update on Drizzle: Went to the vet today. Vet checked out my bunny's 'nether regions' and said that it looks a little inflamed, but so far, not infected. And it's not a bladder issue (thank goodness!) Apparently, my bun must have cut himselfon his penis on accident. How? I'm not sure. Drizzle is on an anti-inflammatory for the next four days (once a day) and then if it doesn't look any better by Monday (or look less swollen), the doc's going to put him on an antibiotic just in case. I'm just glad that he likes taking medicine. When he got home, I let him run around for a good while and gave him a treat for being so good today.Right now, he's resting from his long day at the vet.
