Babies and untrustworthy mom

I have a bunny who isnt really trustworthy of people as she was abused at her previous home.. she had babies and lets me touch them just not her... when should i separate mom and babies... i dont want to take them and her get stressed... any tips i should consider?? she is getting better but wont let me pet her unless its through the cage..

There’s no hard and fast rule on when to separate. Sometimes the mom makes the decision that it’s time to wean and be done with them...you can tell by her behavior around them when that happens. Some moms will let them continue to nurse past the time they should be weaned and then you have to do the separating for her. Generally, 8-10 weeks is a good time. When you move the mother out (which is better than moving the babies out) be sure to keep them together for a bit to minimize the stress of losing mom. By 12 weeks tho they need to already be separated by sex.

i was think about taking them out in twos... would that be okay.. i just wanna make sure i dont stress mom out.. they are eating and drinking and are 5 weeks and 2 days old so not ready to be away from mom yet... what is the best process to separate them??

at five weeks, you can just remove the lot of them. Or just remove her to a different cage. I find with my does removing the doe makes it easier on the kits. She won't be stressed. If she has a WHOLE BUNCH of kits (as in more than five) best to wean kits off more slowly as it helps her milk to decrease better.

I wean at 6 to 8 weeks.

I would remove her when they are around 8weeks. I wouldn’t do now because mom still needs to teach them rabbit things like how to eat their own cecotrophs. The best way we found was just to leave the babies in the cage they are in and just take mom out. We would keep the entire litter together until 10-12 weeks and separate by sexes
