Hi everyone! I'm planning to get Rory a girlfriend bunny sometime next year. There's a chance I might get a baby bunny from the shelter or maybe a breeder. If Rory doesn't get to pick her out (because of a long drive), how accurately sexed can baby bunnies be? How often are they sexed incorrectly? I want to make sure the girl I get really is a girl! Thanks!

It's pretty difficult to sex babies.

But breeders and shelters could probably do a good job at it.

Pet shops, definately no.

If you are really wanting a girl, I think the best option would be to get a 4-5 month old girl or older. Then you know for sure :). Even the best breeders or rescuers can make mistakes with them from time to time!

That silly gender fairy... ;).

Yup the rescue I foster for gave me my last two fosters. She said they were girls. This is a woman who has been around bunnies since the late 80s and nope both boys.

Okay, thanks guys! I would of course love either gender, just that Mr. Rory here would probably like a girlfriend better than a boyfriend. Hehe I could always get a baby girl bunny, and if she turns out to be a boy and Rory doesn't like him... get a for sure girl bunny so I'd have three woohoo! Then get another nother bunny so the second boy bun wouldn't be alone!

Bunnies are some of the more difficult animals to sex when very young.

Even experienced breeders and rabbit judges occasionally mis-sex a rabbit. This is sometimes because of abnormalities of the genitalia.

Pet stores and shelters are far more likely to incorrectly sex.

The older the bunny, the more likely it will be correctly sexed.

We thought Marlin was a girl for a few months, his breeder thought that he was a "she".

Then we went to Peg's (TinysMom) house, and found out Marlin was really a boy! I was actually quite happy to have a boy.

Good thing his name was good for both genders, just had to change the spelling.

Marlyn for a girl.
Marlin for a boy.

:p
