I have chronic fatigue syndrome. Sleep is a big necessity for me.
I have found that a magnesium supplement is very helpful I use magnesium glycinate since it has the least laxative effect. Iodine is another nutrient that helps with sleep, and incidentally with thyroid. To get additional iodine I eat dried nori.
Melatonin has been helpful for many people, although, it had little effect for me.
Excluding light from my bedroom has been very helpful. I use light blocking curtains and shades on my windows. Wiggling around to turn of the light will often break the process of falling asleep. I got a smart switch to turn the light off for me.
One of the best things that I've come upon is Audible. It is a phone app that reads books to you. Unlike a TV that has flashing lights, shocking sounds, loud commercials, etc. Audible quietly engages my imagination without distraction, the gears stop turning as I focus on the story. It sets the stage with eyes closed for a natural falling asleep.
@Contimom is correct about routine being important. Try to be very consistent about bedtime and the routine.
Good luck with whatever treatment you get prescribed.
