Have been really hesitant to get Abby spayed, because she is so small at 7 months (2.1 lbs). Today, our fantastic vet spayed her and she is home doing very well! Will give her meloxicam as directed and watch for infection. Maybe itwas a coincidence, but when i told Dutchess the good news from our vet, she stepped on her musical toy to make it play, as if in applause. When Abby is totally healed, will rebond them and this time hopefully Abby wont just try to hump Dutchess’ face.

I am glad Abby is doing well. :) I had experience my first beloved bun did lots of what my husband said "it is just a coincidence!' but it was just so often coincidences. anyway, I think your Dutchess may be intentionally want to comfort Abby. I saw a rabbit comforting the buddy while the buddy isn't well before.

Abby is not eating. Have given her meloxicam and simethicone along with critical care and a few veggie stems but she wont eat anything in her cage. Called the..vet who did thesurgery is gone fortwo weeks. Am very worried about her. She grinds her teeth. She is peeing and passing very small quantities of poop pellets but wont eat. Is this a normal reaction to spaying? Am thinking she needs more pain meds or something.

Hey there, I am not a Vet, just own rabbits. I remember within 24 hours after surgery, bun normally looking sleepy, not much movement, not eat or drink as much as usual so pee and poo will be less than usual. [the Vet didnt tell you all this?], after that on the second day(in 48 hrs after surgery), the bun should start to have more movement but not exactly look normal active yet, and started to eat/drink more. [ I feel really bad seeing my bun like that so yes I hand feed mixed critical care mixed with lots of water/baby carrot juice) then day 3: my bun 🤯 ran up and down stairs, I was ...😱........ The things different from my cases ** I dont remember any of my buns "grinds teeth" but all buns different may be yr bun gets upset. ** I have 4 buns fixed (different time, different Vets and Different meds) all the Vets gave me different kind of pain relief NOT Meloxicam i guess stronger" but yr bun is only 2 lbs, I think you should call the vet office asking to talk to another Exotic Experience in Rabbit in that office to consult about the pain med, the pain med helps a lots.
@ you should have her on soft cleaned bed and restricted her area, separated from other buns if you have
@ keep close eyes on her quietly so she has lot of resting.
@ if possible after 24 hours hand feeding food and water.
@ make sure her surgery wound is nice and clean and NOT open, if open very risky to have infection, then need to contact the Exotic Vet immediately (I really dont understand why the Vet left his patient(s) for weeks after done surgery if there is another one for his patients to consult in case of any problems)

I do hope my comment give you some help and yr bun recovering well, keep us updated.

Thank you all for your comments! Just called the vets office because Abby is sitting unmoving still in her poop box, hunched up, eyes closed, grinding her teeth, not eating. Vet is gone for 2 weeks. Explained that apparently they gave me enough meloxicam for a 2.1 ounce bunny, not a 2.1 lb bunny, and she is in pain. They said a technician would call me back later! I cannot believe she is on the right dose...the receipt says the dose is for 2.1 ounces bunny weight, not 2.1 lbs! She is getting .06 meloxicam 1.5 mg/ml. Our 4.7 lb bunny takes .5 1.5 mg/ml when her teeth are trimmed. I am starting to feel angry and outraged.

oh my god!! how did they.... This is such a dangerously careless:mad:, she isn't my bun BUT yes I am very upset too. ( I didnt want to upset you that sounded like yr bun had pain but I guess u knew it too) Well, I hope they are able to fix this for you, and hope to hear the updated later that the little bun bun is eating/drinking. ✌🐰

Just spoke with the vet tech who said the dose is right post surgical for a 2.1 lb bunny. She said the highest dose she can give is to double the dose. Otherwise i would need to wait until the exotics vet comes back. I asked about possible GI stasis and she said i would have to take Abby to a different exotics vet t(45 min away if appt even possible)t o ask about a gut stimulant. I am still outraged because i do not understand why they think acute surgical pain should be dosed at a lower dose than occasional chronic tooth pain, and why they dont have a provision to treat gut stasis when it is so frequent a complication in bunnies. I still think the meloxicam dose is too low. Am i missing something? What should the meloxicam dose be for a 2.1 lb bunny post spaying?

Abby still not eating. Gave her simethicone, meloxicam, and a little leftover gut stimulant i had, along with critical care. Got her to eat two carrot top stems. She produced one smooshed formless oversized soft poop.

{Studies have shown that rabbits may require a dose exceeding 0.3mg/kg every 24 hours to achieve optimal plasma levels of Meloxicam over a 24-hour interval.} That what I found on Google, I am not a rabbit Vet, unable to have the right answer for med questions.

I will tell you in more details about how all my buns med, fixed information. First bun-female-2.8 lbs- fixed at 5 yrs, Vet sent home with pain reduced med once a day for 7 days. (not meloxicam) and day 2 started eating, day 3 after fixed she ran up and downstairs, current 3 males buns (3.2, 3.8, 4 lbs fixed about 1 yr old) Rescue Vet did it, had to stay over night that was their rule, Vet sent home with 1 single dosage of pain me but i was told they already gave pain reduce med before i take the buns home (not meloxicam) day 2 all started eating.

yr first Post on Tue, now is Fri day, very seriously, dangerous situation, need exotic now I can only giving you information from what was happening to my buns, and what I would have done but i dont have the right to make decision for you. i would not wait for her vet to come back, Rabbits usually not able to put up with pain this long, your little bun put up with pain for this long, she is a seriously outstanding bun, just like my fist bun. the Vet for our first bun was 1 and a half hours away, round trip 3 hours. the rescue vet was 50 mins away. It is very normal distance for Exotic experience in rabbits Vet to be distance from home. I would find the Vet begging for emergency appointment, and made the most comfortable way in the car for her. All she needed was the right pain reduced med, but now need the Vet to exam her situation. I really hope to near from you next time that yr bun got the right pain reduce med and start eating/drinking,,,,,,,, to be honest with you!!! this case making me....:( because it sounds like .......my husband told me the reason my first beloved bun crossed the bridge because of over dosage but she was also over 9 yrs old by then.

the poop and the amount she ate isn't enough, She does need to see the rabbits expert Vet, yr bun is in pain for really too long :(, I can't believe I hear about the mistake from the animal clinic again. I remember turned on music for rabbits on youtube for my bun while driving to her Vet as it was a long trip.

Hey, This might be better than the information I gave you: go to face book: there is a " Exotic Vet Corners Educational Group" I am wishing you and your little bun all the best ✌
and hope to hear she is better soon 🐰

Abby still wont eat by herself. Am giving her critical care. Found some old meloxicam and am giving her .3 mg bid. Am still outraged and plan taking with our vet when he returns in a couple of weeks. I could take her to a new fet about 45 minutes away on Monday. Hope she starts eating today. She bit me yesterday, first time ever, and digs with her feet so i will put her back while i am feeding her. I cant believe they were so cruel at the vet’s. She seems a little better each day but still wont eat by herself.

Today Abby pooped a little in her box, normal looking pellets, and i saw her eating some veggies in her cage!! :) am so relieved she is doing better. May stop her meloxicam after the next dose. Am still very angry at the vet staff.

I'm glad she's feeling better. Post surgery is always a worrisome time with rabbits.

The underdosing of meloxicam in rabbits is something that really irritates me, and happens far too often due to inexperienced vets(and staff), not understanding the pain control needs and proper medication dosing for rabbits. Usually the meloxicam dose for rabbits is around 1mg/kg per day for up to 5 days, with that split into twice daily dosing for maximum effectiveness.

If your vet really did prescribe only 0.06ml, it's no wonder your rabbit was in pain. That's not even close to being enough to help with minor pain, let alone severe pain from a major medical procedure. That's far under the recommended dose for rabbits, and you really should give that vet, as well as the office manager, a good talking to. They need to change their procedures so something like that doesn't occur again.

I am relieved she is starting to feel better. That is wonderful for both of you. Please keep us updated on what transpires when you speak to the vet about this horrible incident. I hope they really take this seriously and make some necessary changes to their protocol.

Will let you know what happens after our vet returns on the 26th. I am appalled by the way they disregarded Abby’s pain . They still swear .06 is the right meloxicam dose for a 2.17 lb bunny. Abby seems ok today. Am going to give her greens and see if she eats. If she is eatingwill probably stop the 3 meloxicam bid.

Abby is finally eating and pooping normally and is off all pain meds. I let her go outside in a cage next to and separate from Dutchess, with soft orchard grass covering the bottom, and she seems happier. Will speak with the vet when he returns about underdosing of pain meds.
